Penney have said they will hire the same or fewer seasonal workers for the holidays this year than last, while some, like Wal-Mart Stores Inc, have chosen not to hire temporary workers at all.

Macy's holding on to an iconic holiday treat in Chicago

As Macy's continues to mull whether to sell the top floors of the department store chain's flagship State Street store in Chicago, it looks as if at least one of the city's most iconic and beloved holiday traditions, the Walnut Room Christmas tree, will be spared even if the upper floors of the store are sold. Every year, a festively-decorated tree adorns the longstanding Walnut Room, where generations of families have come to enjoy the season. This year's 45-foot-tall Great Tree will be festooned with 2,000 ornaments and 6,600 sparkling lights, Macy's said. The Walnut Room is on the seventh floor of Macy's State Street store. And if the sale of the upper floors happens, it would be floors 8 through 14, a Macy's spokeswoman said today — seemingly sparing the Walnut Room and the Great Tree.

While they both have about the same omnichannel loyalty, Chen calls Kohl's system more advanced. Chen calls Kohl's partnership with Amazon (AMZN) 'game changing," while Macy's is in the middle innings as its new management implements its strategy.
