Tesla power storage deal expected to help Nantucket grid reliability

Nantucket will soon get a little help courtesy of Elon Musk. Musk's company, Tesla Inc., recently signed a deal with utility operator National Grid plc that would have Tesla's large-scale battery energy storage system providing backup power to the island in one of the largest projects of its kind in New England. National Grid officials say the system would especially help the 47.8-square-mile island deal with a surge in electricity demand in the summer, when the population balloons from the typical 12,000 to as much as 60,000 people.

Britain has enough power to meet winter demand - National Grid

Britain will have enough power generation and imports through interconnectors to meet demand this winter, National Grid (NG.L) said in its 2017/18 winter outlook report on Thursday. National Grid increased its forecast for the surplus power margin to 6.2 gigawatts (GW), or 10.3 percent, this winter, compared with the 3.7-4.9 GW it forecast in June. The increase is because this winter is the first delivery year of the government's capacity market, which pays generators to ensure there are reliable sources of electricity supply.

UK Power Reserve sale attracts China's state-owned grids - sources

HONG KONG/LONDON (Reuters) - UK Power Reserve (UKPR), a British electricity firm, put itself up for sale this week and has attracted the interest of at least two state-owned Chinese power grid companies, two sources told Reuters. Firms interested in a company that provides back-up electricity to the National Grid (NG.L) at times of power shortage include Chinese state-owned State Grid Corp and China Southern Power Grid, as well as some other industry players and financial groups, both sources said. The interest comes as foreign takeovers of sensitive assets such as electricity providers in Britain, particularly by the Chinese, are under growing political scrutiny.
