Britain's National Grid (NG.L) said on Tuesday it expects low demand for electricity this summer as small-scale renewables output increases and warned there could be times when there is more generation than needed. In its summer outlook report, National Grid said peak transmission system demand for high summer (June-August) was forecast at 33.7 gigawatts (GW) and the summer minimum at 17 GW. "The increase in distribution connected generation, for example wind and solar photovoltaic, has contributed to this downward trend in demand," the grid operator said in the report.

French state-owned utility EDF (EDF.PA) plans to invest eight billion euros (7 billion pounds) between 2018 and 2035 to become a European market leader in electricity storage. EDF, which already operates pumped storage hydropower plants and some utility-scale power storage batteries, said on Tuesday it aimed to become a French and European market leader, offering storage batteries for customers in the retail power sector. "With storage we can smooth out the intermittence of renewable energy and guarantee the balancing of power grids," EDF chief executive Jean-Bernard Levy told reporters.

Britain has rebuffed calls from the gas industry for an urgent review of the country's gas storage capacity after a cold snap this month triggered warnings of supply shortages and gas prices spiked to their highest in at least a decade. Operators of gas storage sites, industries reliant on gas and developers of new storage projects have been asking for an inquiry since November, following the closure of the Rough site that provided 70 percent of Britain's gas storage capacity. The government says it is up to the market to determine whether it makes sense to invest in new gas storage and if there are any supply shortages, prices will rise sufficiently to attract more gas from elsewhere.
FRANKFURT/DUESSELDORF (Reuters) - German utility E.ON (EONGn.DE) is emerging as an investor favourite following a major asset swap deal with rival RWE (RWEG.DE) this week, with its eye-popping share of regulated profits outshining RWE's riskier bet on renewables. Following the deal, announced on Sunday, shares in both companies soared, as did those in RWE's networks and renewables business Innogy (IGY.DE), which will be broken up as part of the deal and whose assets will split among E.ON and RWE. "E.ON is the winner," said Thomas Hechtfischer, managing director of shareholder advisory group DSW, which usually represents roughly 1 percent of voting rights at the annual general meetings of E.ON and RWE.
Britain's energy regulator wants to trim 5 billion pounds from consumer bills over five years from 2021 by slashing the amount gas and electricity network firms can return to shareholders, it said on Wednesday. Rising energy bills have drawn increasing public criticism, prompting Prime Minister Theresa May promise an end to what she has called "rip off" gas and electricity bills. Under its proposals, Ofgem plans to cut the "cost of equity range", or the amount network firms pay their shareholders, to 3 to 5 percent for the next regulatory period starting 2021, down from 6 to 7 percent now.

Britain's latest auction for back-up electricity cleared well below expectations but without many new gas projects securing agreements which are thought to be needed to help bridge the gap when coal and nuclear plants come offline next decade. Thursday's auction for 2021/22 supply cleared at 8.40 pounds ($11.71) per kilowatt (kW) per year, National Grid's website showed, well below the 15 to 25 pounds range which analysts had forecast. Out of the 50.4 GW of capacity agreements awarded, 48.4 GW was existing capacity and interconnectors.
Ofgem, which valued the project at 800 million pounds, said National Grid should build the infrastructure but the regulator would set revenue for construction and operations, based on assumption that work was put out to competitive tender. Ofgem said its proposals were based on past experience of securing savings for consumers, who pay for such infrastructure in their bills, when it put ownership of transmission lines for offshore wind farms to tender.
National Grid Plc said on Monday it filed a proposal to update rates for one of its U.S. electric and gas distribution utilities in a bid to boost its performance in the country. The three-year rate proposal for the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation electric and gas distribution utility would increase revenue, before the impact of deferred credits, by $206 million in 2018-2019, compared to the company's initial request of $317 million, National Grid said. For 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 incremental year-on-year revenue increases would be $36 million and $60 million, respectively.
Britain's blue-chip index fell on Thursday, led lower by utilities and a decline for Associated British Foods (ABF.L) after warning that profit at its sugar business would fall more than previously forecast. The FTSE (.FTSE) ended 0.3 percent down at 7,700.96 points and the mid-cap index (.FTMC) finished with a 0.5 percent fall. Utilities were weaker after a junior minister told a parliamentary committee that Britain hoped to pass laws to allow the capping of the most common form of gas and electricity tariffs for millions of households by the summer.
