    [$$] Finding a Common Language

When Andy Johnson graduated from high school in 1980, the Washington, D.C., native followed the logical path for anyone good at math and science—engineering. The answer, says the lead manager of the $2.3 billion Neuberger Berman Strategic Income fund (NSTAX), hinges on teamwork—harnessing the expertise of Neuberger’s 150 fixed-income analysts and four other managers to construct a portfolio that homes in on the right risk and reward. “When I started in 1989, a single manager could run a portfolio, but the world is so much more complicated,” says Johnson, who earned an M.B.A. from University of Chicago while still at Northrop and joined what is now Neuberger Berman soon after.
