According to Moffett, aggregate media affiliate fees grew 1% in Q2, its lowest rate since Q2 2020, which was driven by the pandemic. Cable-network affiliate fees were flat (0% growth), but Moffett warned it could be lower because subscriber losses haven’t yet been factored in. Broadcast retransmission-consent revenue growth, impacted by pay TV subscriber erosion for years, was just 8% in Q2, compared to 13% last year.

I just received a Vanguard alert today (9/6/22) stating, “Rosenblatt upgrades Nexstar Media Group to buy from neutral, adjust price to $246 from $181.” That’s a little bit of a bump in their target price.

Recession means advertising stocks get wiped out. no avoiding it. just a fact of life.

The 2022 midterm elections are on track to be the most expensive ever as more than $6.4 billion is being poured into TV, radio and digital ads for U.S. House, Senate, gubernatorial and local races, according to nonpartisan ad tracker AdImpact and campaign finance data.

Anyone have insight on if these LA Clipper games can also be carried on CW? Perry has mentioned the possibility to adding sports to CW, so I wonder if this is the first step.

A solid 15.7% total television advertising growth that was driven by record political advertising, I now will stop complaining about too many political ads on the TV. This is a great statement (CEO Sook) in the ER about guidance, “We continue to have solid three-year visibility on our growth trajectory, given the expected continuation of strong political advertising.” Now that is a positive guidance projection, he also stated that there is currently no evidence that macroeconomic challenges are impacting the business. Nexstar just fired a popular KTLA 5 Weekend News Host Mark Mester, who showed class when the management didn't. Looks like they have very touchy management and have no employee or customer loyalty. Not sure this is the type of company to invest in for me. Plus they just advertised that "News Nation" the "Unbiased news", just hired Chris Cuomo. Something is wrong here, with a number of insiders "disposing" of holdings, but people have to eat!

“The strength of this revenue source should help offset continued weakness in the automotive category and any general economic weakness that may arise,” Sook said.

Core advertising revenue (which made up 83% of total TV advertising rev) dropped 2.5% to $413 million.

Nexstar attributed this decline to drops in categories including insurance, automotive, direct response, government spending related to the COVID-19 pandemic and packaged goods.

Revenue growth was driven by political advertising which Wall St. has traditionally discounted as it considers it non-recurring and a good portion of that inventory would be sold anyway so only 50% (approx) is considered incremental.

Auto weak bad. Home repair and related categories strong not encouraging either as once the real estate recession kicks into high gear these categories will get hurt badly.

It doesn't appear that the acquisition of "The Hill" was presented on a pro forma basis which makes results look better than they are.

Total net leverage ratio of 3.32X is ok for now....if ad market goes down, which it will, this can very quickly change to a problematic number (go see what happened in 08/09 with broadcasters).

Large headline share repurchase # is good but company is under no obligation to actually repurchase shares. A legitimate question that has been asked for years by Wall St. analysts is why would you repurchase shares in a dying business? NXST owns terrestrial TV stations and there is actually no real need for TV stations from a technology perspective. A dinosaur business some call it.

I trimmed (sold) 20% of NXST from several of our accounts today. I cannot imagine not having this in our portfolio, so rarely will I completely close out (timing the top) a position. “To make money in stocks you must have the vision to see them, the courage to buy them and the patience to hold them" - George F. Buying $1.5 billion shares is like 20% return, excluding dividend payment. Bro this company is a steal!

In Q1, $NXST had 325M in cash, more than they usually carry. They had $415M in repurchasing left. I’m assuming they have gone through the $415M, which is why they’ve reauthorized another $1.5B share repurchase. This is wild when looking at market cap of this company of 7.5B.

The Chris Cuomo pickup was great for NewsNation, especially since it’s rumored they are only paying him $1M. Hopefully that’s the star power they need to make NewsNation actually work. So far it’s been a completely failure with 50k viewers.
