A Berkshire Hathaway (ticker: BRKA) investment manager recently nearly doubled his personal holdings of Optical Cable (OCC) stock.

Ted Weschler, who has been working for Warren Buffett since 2012, bought 364,500 more shares of the maker of fiber-optic and copper data-communication cabling for his own account. As of Dec. 31, Weschler had overall ownership of 768,500 Optical Cable shares, a stake of 9.99%, he disclosed in a form he filed to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday. As of Sept. 14, he owned 404,000 shares, a stake of 5.25%.

The headline news this morning on sales/earnings can be misleading because of two big negatives: (1) Gross margins and operating margins for this quarter and the first half year over year had actually deteriorated; (2) Forecast for second quarter is weak. Thus, seems like a fluke, and based on backlog, the company admits that in this quarter sales will actually decline. Here is the quote: “However, based on current backlog/forward load, the Company anticipates that net sales during the third quarter will be less than net sales during the second quarter of 2018”.
