The economic and political crisis that has gripped Venezuela has played a big part in the rise of oil prices to recent highs and there's no sign of relief on the way.
Crude oil prices popped following President Donald Trump’s announcement that the U.S. will withdraw from the Iran deal. The $2 billion United States Oil fund (USO), for example, promises to deliver exposure to oil prices on a day-to-day basis. It does that by holding West Texas Intermediate crude futures, but because crude oil futures contracts expire every month, the fund administrator is required to continuously sell the expiring contract and buy the next month’s futures.

President Donald Trump announced that he would deliver his decision on Iran nuclear sanctions today at 2 PM ET, ahead of the May 12 deadline via Twitter. Crude-oil prices rallied Monday, then gave back gains following President Trump's tweet, but reversed directions on reports that he told President Emmanuel Macron of France that the U.S. will withdraw. Brent crude, the benchmark for global oil prices, has fallen 1.6% to $74.95 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude, the benchmark for North America, has fallen nearly 2.3% to $69.07 per barrel.
