German police arrested the head of powertrain development at Volkswagen's Porsche business and are holding him on remand because he is considered a flight risk, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday. The arrest of Joerg Kerner was related to ongoing inquiries into emissions manipulation at Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), more than two years after the German carmaker admitted cheating on U.S. exhaust tests, the person said. A spokesman for Porsche declined to comment.

Factbox: Volkswagen's warring stakeholders to hash out new strategy

Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) directors will meet on Thursday to discuss a far-reaching shake-up of its structure and leadership, in a test of unity for the car and truck maker's often divided management, labor chiefs and other stakeholders. Chief Executive Matthias Mueller is set to be replaced by VW brand boss Herbert Diess after failing to refocus the group's portfolio of car brands, ranging from Skoda to Lamborghini. Volkswagen's efforts to reform have often been stifled by powerful labor unions who command half of the seats on the board of directors, and the German state of Lower Saxony, which controls a 20 percent voting stake.

Volkswagen to replace CEO with VW brand chief: sources

BERLIN/HAMBURG (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) is poised to replace Chief Executive Matthias Mueller with the head of its core VW brand, Herbert Diess, two people familiar with the matter said, as it looks to give fresh impetus to its recovery from an emissions scandal. The move comes after Europe's largest automaker has been hampered by infighting among its powerful stakeholders, which include the Porsche and Piech families, the German state of Lower Saxony, and labour leaders. Shares in Volkswagen jumped on the news, and closed up 4.5 percent at 171.58 euros.

Prosecutors search VW headquarters in new emissions investigation

German prosecutors said on Tuesday they had searched Volkswagen's headquarters as part of a new investigation into whether the carmaker had overstated the fuel efficiency of more vehicles than previously disclosed. Prosecutors from the city of Braunschweig searched 13 offices at Volkswagen's (VW) headquarters in nearby Wolfsburg at the start of March, seizing documents and computer files that will now be reviewed, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office said, confirming a report by German magazine WirtschaftsWoche. In that statement, VW said its own investigations found it had understated fuel consumption, and hence carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, on no more than 36,000 vehicles.

    Junkyard Gem: 1972 Porsche 914

During the second half of the 1960s, Porsche sold a four-cylinder version of the 911 as their lowest-priced car. The 912 sold well at first, but replaced by a joint Volkswagen-Porsche project, the 914, in 1969. The six-cylinder 914-6 was badged as a Porsche in Europe, while the four-cylinder 914 was sold as a Volkswagen-Porsche. In North America, all 914s were Porsche-badged, and they sold very well. Here's a '72 project car that got junked in Denver before completion.

Porsche hands the wheel to 4th generation members of family clan

Three new representatives of the Porsche and Piech family will take seats on the supervisory board of Porsche Automobil Holding (PSHG_p.DE), the company said on Friday, handing responsibility for Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) oversight to a younger generation. Porsche Automobil Holding SE, which controls a 52.2 percent voting stake in Volkswagen, the world's largest carmaker, said its board of directors would be extended from six to 10 members, allowing some fourth-generation members of the clan to gain a seat. Hans-Peter Porsche, a grandson of VW Beetle designer Ferdinand Porsche, will resign from the supervisory board, and hand control to Josef Michael Ahorner, Stefan Piëch and Peter Daniell Porsche, the company said.

Porsche's electrification to lead to most powerful 911 to date, says CEO

The storied 911 will not be immune from Porsche's electrification plans and that could be a good thing. Porsche already makes 911 models above the 700 mark so it's likely CEO Oliver Blume was referring to a non-performance version of the 911. There was a time when anything but an air-cooled 911 was considered a disgrace.
