Truck manufacturers are pushing full steam ahead into connected vehicle platforms, using telematics and data integration to drive value for customers while providing countless other benefits for partners, the community and the OEMs themselves. Paccar Inc (NASDAQ: PCAR) started its digital transformation journey in 2015 with a remote diagnostics platform, said Jamin Swazo, director of marketing, Kenworth Trucks. The company has since expanded from a Paccar engine-only platform to a Cummins engine platform and more recently a connected system for its medium-duty trucks.
"The number one benefit of buying a trailer is CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) compliance because you are in control of it," Todd Amen, president and chief executive officer of the owner-operator financial services company ATBS said. "A leased owner-operator owning his or her own trailer," Amen stated, "can expect to earn 3 cents to 12 cents per mile more, with the average being about 6 cents.

The cutbacks are in Class 5-7 medium-duty trucks, whose industry-wide inventories are ballooning even as retail sales are up 6 percent year to date through June, according to ACT Research. The issue is a 30 percent increase in inventory – 55,400 unsold medium-duty trucks in June compared to 42,700 the same month in 2018.

The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Aug. 6 announced a $1.7 million settlement agreement with Bellevue, Wash.-based PACCAR (NASDAQ: PCAR) to settle allegations that the truck maker's European subsidiary illegally engaged in the sale of 63 trucks from Europe to Iran between October 2013 and February 2015.
