EMERGING MARKETS-Argentine equities hit again by sprawling corruption probe

SAO PAULO/BUENOS AIRES, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Argentine equities tumbled for the second straight day on Wednesday as investor concerns grew that a massive corruption probe that began last week could expand and affect more companies. The wide-ranging investigation has already swept up construction magnates accused of attempting to secure contracts by delivering millions of dollars in bribes to officials in former President Cristina Fernandez's government. Executives at Techint, the parent company of steel company Ternium SA, have also been questioned.

Casino strikes confident tone as Q2 sales beat forecasts

Retailer Casino (CASP.PA), which is battling to ease investor concerns about its high debt levels, posted stronger-than-expected second-quarter revenue, thanks to accelerating sales in France and Brazil, and predicted solid growth ahead. The group, whose credit rating was cut to junk by Standard & Poor's in March 2016, is under pressure to show it can revive profits in France, where it competes with bigger rivals such as Carrefour (CARR.PA), while conditions in Brazil stay tough. Casino, which controls Brazil's top retailer Grupo Pao de Acucar (PCAR4.SA), said second-quarter sales reached 8.916 billion euros, above the 8.8 billion euros average in a company-compiled consensus of analysts' forecasts.

Brazil deal to end truckers' strike rattles Petrobras investors

BRASILIA/SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Petrobras shares plunged 15 percent on Monday after Brazil's government offered new fuel subsidies and softened the oil producer's pricing policy in a bid to settle a truckers' strike that has wreaked havoc on Latin America's largest economy. As a result of tax cuts and subsidies announced by President Michel Temer late on Sunday, domestic diesel prices would fall 0.46 real per litre, or about 13 percent of the current price at the pump, and remain frozen for 60 days. Shareholders in state-controlled Petróleo Brasileiro SA (PETR4.SA), which earlier this month soared after the company reported its highest profits in five years, have been hammered as the stock lost nearly a third of its value in the past week.

Retailer Casino's 2018 goals on track as French performance improves

French supermarket retailer Casino (CASP.PA) reported solid first-quarter sales on Tuesday, allowing it to keep its full-year profit goals on track thanks to accelerating sales at its French hypermarkets and signs of improvement in Brazil. Casino, whose credit rating was cut to junk by Standard & Poor's in March 2016, is under pressure to show it can revive sales and profits at home as conditions in Brazil remain tough, due in part to food deflation. "Strong first quarter sales gives us comfort over the detailed guidance we gave in March," Chief Financial Officer Antoine Giscard d'Estaing told analysts.

Amazon in talks with Casino over Brazil electronics chain: source

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Casino Guichard Perrachon SA (CASP.PA) are negotiating a deal in Brazil either partnering or selling the French retailer's local appliance and electronics chain, a source familiar with the talks said on Tuesday. The talks concerning Casino's Via Varejo SA (VVAR3.SA) unit, which includes Brazil's third-largest e-commerce operation and more than 900 stores in the country, would accelerate Amazon's previously tepid advances into Latin America's largest market. The negotiation comes as the U.S. e-commerce leader and Casino have struck an agreement to sell groceries from the French group's upmarket Monoprix through Amazon.

Retailer Casino's efforts to revive profits fall flat with investors

Retailer Casino (CASP.PA) delivered a cautious profit outlook on Thursday that hit its share price, as the French company grapples with reviving profits in its main markets of France and Brazil. Casino, which faces tough competition in France and a recession in Brazil, said it will step up its online offerings in the face of challenges from Amazon (AMZN.O) and will cut debt after it rose sharply in 2017. The retailer said it expects to grow profits in 2018 with the help of cost savings as it posted a 20.1 percent jump in its 2017 operating profit to 1.242 billion euros, which included 198 million euros (176.67 million pounds) in tax credits in Brazil.
