U.K. stocks decline on Friday and suffer a weekly loss, with shares of Royal Bank of Scotland PLC and International Consolidates Airlines Group SA leading the charge south after results.
Educational publisher Pearson said on Friday it was in talks with potential buyers to sell its K12 school business in the United States, as it reported 2017 adjusted operating profit at the top end of its guidance. The British company is restructuring after issuing a string of profit warnings sparked by the cost of moving to digital from paper textbooks, repeatedly knocking investor confidence and forcing it to cut thousands of jobs. It said on Friday its profit was 576 million pounds, down 9 percent but above its recently upgraded range of 570 million to 575 million pounds, due to a lower tax rate.

Educational publisher Pearson (PSON.L) expects pressure from its North American business to weigh on 2018 earnings, the former owner of the Financial Times newspaper warned on Wednesday, sending its shares to three-month lows. Pearson, which has struggled since turning its focus to education, said retail partners had turned more cautious when ordering books, forecasting 2017 sales in U.S. higher education course materials down 3 percent on an underlying basis. "Our higher ed courseware business is about 25 percent of Pearson, the other 75 percent of the business has performed well," Chief Executive John Fallon said.
World shares pulled back from record highs on Wednesday, set for only their second day of losses in 2018 as lower commodity prices and a string of downbeat updates from companies dampened the mood in global markets. European bourses opened lower, mirroring moves in Asia and Wall Street overnight, as earnings updates from companies weighed.

Education group Pearson has agreed the sale of its Wall Street English (WSE) business to Baring Private Equity Asia and CITIC Capital for around $300 million (225.3 million pounds), although its proceeds from the deal will be just a third of that. Pearson, which has sold several assets to focus on its core education business and cut debt, said that of the $300 million, $50 million would cover tax and net transaction costs while $150 million would be retained in the disposed business. Pearson, which has sold off assets including the Financial Times newspaper and the Economist magazine, had net debt of 1.3 billion pounds at the end of September.

U.S. media accounts for a staggering one third of the global media market. Nevertheless, this industry is lately going through severe fluctuations.
U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday after company earnings reports were better than expected, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average breaching the 23,000 mark for the first time, while the U.S. Treasury yield curve flattened and the dollar rose to a one-week high on increased inflation expectations. The Dow briefly touched a new high of 23,002.20, powered by earnings from UnitedHealth and Johnson & Johnson. The S&P 500 had been negative as traders were left unimpressed by some bank earnings, but it ticked up before the market closed.
Publisher Pearson (PSON.L) said on Tuesday it had agreed a deal to insure a third of its pension scheme liabilities totalling 1.2 billion pounds with Legal & General (LGEN.L) and Aviva (AV.L). The deal "substantially reduces" the risk that Pearson would be unable to fund future retiree benefits and was agreed at no further cost to the company, it said in a nine-month trading update. Under the so-called 'buy-in bulk annuity', the insurers take on some of the risk of the pension scheme, which remains with the company.
World equity markets held close to all-time highs on Tuesday, as investors latched on to rising bets on higher borrowing costs in the U.S. and Britain. Reports that U.S. President Trump might pick Stanford University economist John Taylor to lead the Fed after Janet Yellen’s term ends next year sent two-year Treasury yields to their highest since 2008 and pushed up the dollar.
