Poste Italiane's first quarter operating profit falls on lower gains from government bonds

Postal service provider Poste Italiane SpA reported a 12 percent year-on-year fall in first-quarter operating profit on Wednesday, due to lower capital gains from government bond sales and higher costs. The state-controlled conglomerate indicated earlier this year it aimed to lessen its reliance on capital gains from its large government bond holdings, which it has been using in the past to offset restructuring charges linked to layoffs. Earning before interest and tax (EBIT) came in at 617 million euros (529 million pounds), down from 703 million euros in the same period of last year, according to a company statement.

Italy eyes real estate for cash as privatisations become a mirage

Italy will fall far short in this year's privatisation programme to rein in public debt, coalition officials said, with the government now aiming to raise a third of the originally planned amount by selling real estate. Italy's public debt rose last year to 132.2 percent of GDP, proportionally the second highest in the euro zone after Greece's and up from 131.4 percent the year before. With the European Commission and financial markets fretting, in its 2019 budget last autumn the government vowed to reverse the trend partly through an ambitious 18-billion-euro ($20.17 billion) privatisation plan.

Italy's Ferrovie calls for Alitalia two-month deadline extension - sources

Ferrovie dello Stato, the state-owned operator of Italy's railways, has been in talks with Delta Air Lines over the rescue of Alitalia but last week said it needed more time to iron out a business plan for Italian flag carrier. Alitalia was placed under special administration in 2017 after workers rejected the latest in a long line of rescue plans, and Ferrovie has been struggling to find partners ready to inject fresh funds and revamp the airline. An end of March deadline expired as Ferrovie and its advisers were looking for investors.

Italy's Nexi prices IPO to value group at up to 6.4 bln euros

Nexi on Tuesday priced shares in its initial public offering at between 8.5 and 10.35 euros each, valuing the Italian payments group at up to 6.4 billion euros ($7.2 billion) in what is set to be one of Europe's biggest bourse listings this year. Once a backwater of banking, the payment processing sector is now seen as one of the most lucrative and fast-growing businesses in the financial sector. According to McKinsey, global payments are set to reach $3 trillion a year in revenue by 2023 as more people switch from cash to digital payments.

Poste Italiane aims to ride e-commerce wave to boost parcel delivery

Poste Italiane aims to more than double the number of parcels it delivers by 2022, the head of its Mail and Parcel (M&P) unit said, as the former postal services monopoly presses on with its restructuring. The group, which now comprises insurance and financial divisions and a digital payments unit in addition to M&P, has suffered falling letter volumes since at least 2008. "We aim to deliver 100 million parcels in 2022 compared with 45 million our staff delivered last year," Massimo Rosini, head of M&P division, told investors in London.

Poste Italiane can withstand competition from Amazon - CEO

Poste Italiane can weather competition from Amazon.com in its deliveries business, the chief executive of the former Italian postal services monopoly said on Friday. Last month the Italian government formally authorised the U.S. e-commerce giant to operate as a postal operator in the country through its subsidiaries Amazon Italia Logistics and Amazon Italia Transport. "They can compete with us on some segments, but Poste has got big enough shoulders to face competition," Matteo Del Fante said on the sidelines of an event in Milan, adding that Poste serves a more widespread network.

Italian state railways says will bid for Alitalia, other firms back off

Major companies on Tuesday ruled out involvement in a new rescue of Alitalia, complicating a plan led by Rome in which state-controlled railway Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) (IPO-FERRO.MI) will bid for the airline and look to bring in partners. Alitalia was put under special administration last year, leaving the government once again seeking a buyer to save the carrier. FS said its board had decided to put in an offer to buy Alitalia, but gave no further details.
