Why IBM's Stock Jumped as Much as 10% Higher Today

The fourth-quarter earnings report exceeded Wall Street's expectations, and management issued optimistic guidance for the next year as well.

Go Long IBM Stock for the Short Term, But Don’t Overstay Your Welcome

When the markets fell 400 points on Tuesday, the after-hour spike action in IBM (NYSE:IBM) stock was refreshing. The rally continues this morning as it is up 8%. Don't get too excited because this is the extent of my enthusiasm on the stock in 2019. I apologize in advance to the uber fans of IBM stock. Keep in mind that today I am judging the stock from a long-term perspective not the short-term bounce. My dislike for IBM stock is nothing against those who still believe in it. I am just not very patient when I see the same story for years on end. For a trade and for those long IBM stock, I'd say to stay in it. But for deploying new money I can find better candidates. Technically, there are short-term upside targets all the way to $142 per share. But that was a major pivot point and to get to that point, the stock would be slicing through the 25% dip it suffered last October. This current spike clears IBM stock from its Christmas pit. InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips Wall Street analysts mostly rate IBM as a "hold" so there is the threat of positive upgrade headlines to help add fuel to the rally, but I am just not sure that this earnings headline was the right catalyst for it. Nevertheless, IBM price is still well below their average price of $142 per share. The easy money has been made on this bounce. From here IBM will need the help of the general markets. Today, my caution on IBM stems from the long-term relative performance versus the market. Simply stated, if IBM is rallying then the markets in general are also higher. And I prefer to risk my money somewhere else. ### IBM Earnings Before you send hate mail, consider the fact that coming into its earnings, IBM was trading at the same level that it traded in 1999. I don't care what the excuses are, compared to other names like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Microsoft (NASDA:MSFT), you see the point I'm trying to make. There are better places to risk my money than IBM stock. Last night management delivered a decent earning report, but they barely beat expectations. The CFO sounded very enthusiastic over their outlook, but they raised guidance by a mere four cents. The cloud growth was only 12% and their strategic imperatives were up only 9%. While these are still positive steps, the ship is turning too slowly and even Warren Buffet got tired of waiting. I am not smarter than him. While there are some setbacks in cloud, the CFO noted their excitement about their position in the hybrid-cloud, especially with their acquisition of Red Hat (NYSE:RHT). Therein lies another potential can of worms. The arbitrage between the acquisition price and current RHT stock price is too large for comfort. RTH stock is still trading $15 below the deal price. That is too wide margin for arbitrage. Is the deal in jeopardy? For the IBM fans… Yes, they did beat expectations. But a $0.04 raise for 2019 is not worth a 8% spike in the stock. This is not a management team that deserves more benefit of the doubt. They have been promising a turnaround of massive proportions for years. Maybe this is the actual beginning of it but it's not for me. ### The Bottom Line for IBM Stock I see IBM as a show-me-don't-tell-me situation. To compare it to momentum stocks like Amazon, IBM is definitely a slacker. If I compare it to another stock that slacked for years, MSFT has turned itself around markedly and is now the largest company by market cap. * 7 Stupidly Cheap Stocks to Buy Now So whatever way I slice it, the IBM report did not give me the green light to go all-in. For a trade, I would stay long it into the resistance at $142. I cannot fault anyone for trying to trade the upside here in the short-term. But keep in mind that this may not be the bottom of the stock in the long run. And IBM's success will likely be market dependent for the next few months. Beyond that, the onus is on management to show real growth… not just pennies. Click here for a bonus video on Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) stock. This is a wild one but there are clues. IBM Jumps After Q4 Earnings, Cloud-Focused Outlook Following $34B Red Hat Deal

shares were indicated sharply higher in pre-market trading Wednesday after the iconic tech firm posted stronger-than-expected fourth quarter earnings and said its recent acquisition of Red Hat Inc. would help boost cloud computing sales in 2019. Group sales were also softer than the prior period, falling 1% to $21.76 billion, but the figure topped estimates and IBM said it sees free cash flow for 2019 of around $12 billion, largely in-line with its tally over the past year.

IBM exec on Red Hat deal: Reaction 'overwhelmingly positive'

IBM’s $34 billion buyout of Raleigh-based Red Hat remains on track, says a top Big Blue exec.   James Kavanaugh, IBM’s chief financial officer, called client response to the pending deal “overwhelmingly positive.” On IBM’s fourth quarter earnings call Tuesday, he pointed to Red Hat’s recently reported bookings as further validation that clients are on board with the deal, “which is all about accelerating hybrid cloud adoption.” And he reminded analysts that more than 99 percent of Red Hat shareholders voted to approve the transaction last week, showing they, too, are on board. “We see an opportunity to lift all of IBM by selling more of our own IBM cloud and by selling more of our analytics and AI capabilities on OpenShift across multiple platforms,” Kavanaugh said, noting that, as clients look deeper into the cloud, they need more services “help,” which is where IBM comes in.

IBM revenue beats estimates on strength in cloud, services businesses

IBM Corp reported a smaller-than-expected 3.5 percent drop in fourth-quarter revenue on Tuesday, as higher sales in its newer businesses such as cloud, software and services partially offset tapering sales of its latest mainframe computers and the pressures from a strong dollar. IBM said revenue slipped to $21.76 billion in the three months ended Dec. 31, but came in above analysts' average estimate of $21.71 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv. Analysts had expected $4.82.

IBM Stock’s Red Hat Era Begins With Its Q4 Report

IBM (NYSE:IBM) releases its fourth-quarter results Jan. 22 after the markets close. This marks Big Blue's first report since announcing its $34 billion acquisition of Red Hat (NYSE:RHT) in late October, a move that initially hurt IBM stock, but has since recovered some of those post-acquisition losses. This earnings report will be divided into two parts. First, how did the business do in the final quarter of the year, and secondly, what's the plan to integrate Red Hat into the fold? InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips If investors don't get all warm and fuzzy by CEO Ginni Rometty's words in the press release and subsequent conference call, you can expect IBM stock to revisit the low $100s in the days and weeks that follow. So, let's address each of the parts individually, and then I'll tie it all together at the end. ### The Fourth-Quarter Results When IBM reported its Q3 2018 results in mid-October, investors were looking for good things from Big Blue. Unfortunately, they were disappointed with revenues falling well short of the midpoint consensus revenue estimate of $19.05 billion. It did slightly better on the bottom line delivering $3.42 a share, 0.6% higher than analyst expectations. * 7 Companies Apple Should Consider Buying Given how disappointing Ginni Rometty's run as CEO has been, it needed to do better. It didn't. As a result, investor expectations will be sky high next Tuesday when it reports on the company's performance in the final quarter of the fiscal year. Analysts are expecting $4.84 a share, down 30 cents from a year earlier, on $21.75 billion in revenue, which is 3.5% less than in the same period a year earlier. On a fiscal basis, analysts are expecting $13.80 in earnings and $79.66 billion in sales. Looking ahead, analysts expect earnings of $13.84 a share, a mere four cents higher than a year earlier, on $79.06 billion in revenue, $600 million lower than in 2018. In the last four quarters, IBM's had earnings surprises ranging from -0.60% in the fourth quarter last year to 1.3% in the second quarter this year. I wouldn't be looking for a positive surprise that lights up IBM stock. Instead, I'd be focused on what it says about Red Hat and the way forward. ### Will Red Hat Ever Pay for Itself? IBM made the Red Hat acquisition so it could remain a player in cloud computing, one of the company's strategic imperatives. That said, $34 billion -- or approximately ten times sales -- is a big price to pay to remain a player in the cloud computing business. With Red Hat's revenue growth of 14% in its latest quarter, IBM is paying premium dollars for average growth. As a result, Rometty needs to fill in the blanks for investors on how IBM intends to leverage Red Hat to re-energize the company's revenue growth. IBM will have to deliver enough synergies to ratchet up cash flow so that it can repay some of the debt it's using to make this Hail Mary pass. My InvestorPlace colleague James Brumley discussed the Red Hat acquisition in early November shortly after it was announced. James' bottom line on IBM stock does a nice job explaining the futility of Rometty's move. "When all is said and done, Red Hat won't do much to alter IBM's fiscal stagnation. Synergy is the intended outcome of most acquisitions, and it's not clear if this deal will create any synergy," Brumley wrote November 9. "And IBM just paid a steep price for a new revenue stream. Specifically, IBM is forking over more than ten times Red Hat's trailing revenue and more than 40 times Red Hat's likely earnings for 2019." Large acquisitions historically tend to go very wrong because CEOs overestimate both the synergies from a deal and the strategic importance the acquired firm brings to the table. Don't get me wrong, Red Hat's a great company, but Rometty's going to have to come up with some compelling reasons why this isn't anything more than a last ditch effort to save her legacy as CEO. * 7 Retail Stocks to Buy for the Rise of Menswear Personally, I don't think she can pull it off. On Tuesday, we'll find out if I'm right. As of this writing, Will Ashworth did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities. ### More From InvestorPlace * 2 Toxic Pot Stocks You Should Avoid * 7 Companies Apple Should Consider Buying * 7 Beaten-Up Housing Stocks Due for a Bounce Back * Take Buffett's Advice: 5 Vanguard Funds to Buy Compare Brokers The post IBM Stock's Red Hat Era Begins With Its Q4 Report appeared first on InvestorPlace.
