Colgate halts Venezuela detergent plant for lack of boxes

U.S. consumer goods maker Colgate-Palmolive Co (CL.N) has halted production at its detergent and dish soap plant in Venezuela because it lacked cardboard boxes to ship products, a union leader said on Thursday. The plant in the city of Valencia stopped operations on Monday, union representative Carlos Rodriguez said in a telephone interview. Its cardboard provider, Ireland's Smurfit Kappa (SKG.I), halted production in Venezuela last month after government authorities took over its local unit.

From Unilever to Ford, companies in Venezuela cling on by cutting products

CARACAS/VALENCIA, Venezuela (Reuters) - Unilever's factory in the outskirts of the northern Venezuelan city of Valencia once bustled with activity as it produced everything from soap to toothpaste for one of South America's wealthiest economies. Now, with Venezuela struggling with a fifth year of recession and its economy wracked by hyperinflation, there are few signs of activity. The Anglo-Dutch conglomerate has quietly scaled back its output in the crisis-stricken oil-producing nation to a single product - Tio Rico ice cream - produced in Valencia and at another plant in Barquisimeto, some 90 miles (145 km) to the west.

Smurfit Kappa says to protect interests after Venezuela plant seizure

Packaging company Smurfit Kappa Plc (SKG.I) on Wednesday confirmed the temporary seizure of its Venezuelan plant by the government and the detention of two employees and said it would work to protect the interests of its stakeholders. Venezuela's state price control agency Sundde on Aug. 21 announced that the government had seized the plant and two days later said two managers at the plant had been arrested. Smurfit, which has operated in Venezuela since 1986, last week refuted all allegations which it described as without merit, but it did not immediately confirm the seizure or the arrests.
