SNC-Lavalin Soars as Election Uncertainty Eases With Trudeau Win

(Bloomberg) -- Shares of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. surged amid optimism Justin Trudeau’s election win may pave the way forward for the embattled engineering firm.Montreal-based SNC jumped as much as 12%, the most since Sept. 10, after Prime Minister Trudeau’s Liberal Party won a second term to lead Canada with a minority government. The company found itself in the middle of Canada’s biggest political crisis in years after the country’s ethics watchdog found Trudeau pushed for the company avoid a criminal trial over its dealings in Libya. When asked whether a so-called deferred-prosecution agreement is more likely with the Trudeau Liberals back in power, Finance Minister Bill Morneau said on BNN Bloomberg TV Tuesday: “That’s a continuing discussion that the justice minister will have to have.”Trudeau has always said his interest in SNC’s fate was based on his desire to avoid job losses.Expect Bigger Deficits and Energy Risk Under a Trudeau MinorityPrior to this week, the stock had slumped more than 60% this year after the company issued three profit warnings, wrote down the value of its Middle East energy business and lost a contract in Chile valued at $260 million. Not everyone is optimistic about SNC prospects. “We see no reason to be long SNC-Lavalin until better visibility is offered,” Frederic Bastien, analyst at Raymond James said in a report published before the election results came in. The status of its court proceedings, the challenged fixed-price projects it has yet to substantially complete, and the earnings trajectory of its low-risk engineering and nuclear services businesses are all reasons to stay cautious, he added.\--With assistance from Aoyon Ashraf. To contact the reporter on this story: Divya Balji in Toronto at dbalji1@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Madeleine Lim at mlim131@bloomberg.net, ;David Scanlan at dscanlan@bloomberg.net, Jacqueline ThorpeFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

CANADA STOCKS-TSX rises on Trudeau's re-election but energy sector lags

Oct 22 (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index rose on Tuesday as investors cheered the re-election of a Liberal government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but concerns over a minority government's ability to build new oil pipelines pulled energy shares lower. * At 9:50 a.m. ET (13:50 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was up 44.04 points, or 0.27%, at 16,462.49. * Trudeau's Liberals held onto power after a closely fought election on Monday but were reduced to a minority. * Ten of the index's 11 major sectors were higher, with only energy down as a minority leaves Trudeau in need of support from Left-leaning parties that are opposed to new oil pipelines * The financials sector gained 0.3%, while industrials rose 0.5%. * The materials sector, which includes precious and base metals miners, added 0.4% despite gold futures being unchanged. * On the TSX, 164 issues were higher, while 63 issues declined for a 2.60-to-1 ratio favouring gainers, with 12.81 million shares traded. * The largest percentage gainers on the TSX were Lavalin Group Inc and West Fraser Timber Co Ltd. * Methanex Corp fell 4.4%, the most on the TSX, while the second biggest decliner was Ballard Power Systems Inc , down 2.9%. * The most heavily traded shares by volume were Wallbridge Mining Co Ltd, Spectra7 Microsystems Inc, and Aurora Cannabis. * The TSX posted six new 52-week highs and two new lows. * Across all Canadian issues there were 10 new 52-week highs and seven new lows, with total volume of 26.32 million shares. SNC Lavalin sees power revenues tripling over next 10 years: exec

Canada's SNC-Lavalin Group sees revenues from its power businesses tripling over the next 10 years, fueled by appetite from North American utilities to digitize and modernize their grid networks, a company executive told Reuters. The opportunity in power comes as SNC is in the middle of a broader restructuring to turn its finances around after the company withdrew its 2019 forecast, announced plans to exit fixed price contracts and 15 countries and explore options for its resources business. Montreal-based SNC, which was at the center of a political crisis engulfing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this year, has faced pressure in the Middle East amid a dispute between Canada and Saudi Arabia.
