Telecom tower climber gets $30M settlement in fall suit

A telecommunications tower climber who suffered severe injuries when a ladder rung dislodged and sent him hurtling 50 feet to the ground has reached a settlement with AT&T and others for $30 million. The June 2013 fall in Allentown, Pennsylvania, left then-23-year-old Thomas Jeglum in a coma for months with multiple fractures to his pelvis, spine, arm and legs. AT&T says it's focused on worker safety and is glad the case against one of its vendors has been resolved.

FCC investigating website flaw that exposed mobile phone locations

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission said on Friday it was referring reports that a website flaw could have allowed the location of mobile phone customers to be tracked to its enforcement bureau to investigate. A security researcher said earlier this week that data from LocationSmart, a California-based tech firm, could have been used to track AT&T Inc (T.N), Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N), Sprint Corp (S.N) and T-Mobile US (TMUS.O) mobile consumers within a few hundred yards of their location and without their consent. Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, on Friday had urged the FCC to investigate, saying on Twitter that a "hacker could have used this site to know when you were in your house so they would know when to rob it.

Using Technical Analysis to Profit: Cramer's 'Mad Money' Recap (Friday 5/18/18)

In a special episode of Mad Money Friday, Jim Cramer dedicated the entire show to the art and science of technical analysis, picking the best charts from his weekly "Off the Charts" segment and analyzing even closer. Cramer said it's because charts are like the footprints at the scene of the crime, clues to what the big money managers are likely thinking. While Cramer is still a firm believer in fundamental analysis, analyzing how a company is performing and how its sector fits into his larger world view, he said technical analysis can be a useful tool to confirm a trend or disprove a theory.

While Hollywood Fiddles With Gigantism, Apple and Netflix Burn it Up

This week's frantic maneuvers between (most of) the CBS board and Shari Redstone's National Amusements remind that the owners of companies aren't always in command of that which they putatively control. More importantly, the week's court fights are yet another illustration that Hollywood's focus on gigantism has left them distracted by M&A when they could be investing and building the new businesses they'll need to compete with the giant tech competitors transforming their industry. Simply put, Hollywood's biggest guns are fiddling an ode to oversized-ness worthy of Nero.

AT&T Union Files Complaint to Force Tax Windfall Plan Disclosure

A union representing AT&T Inc. employees filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board accusing the telecom giant of illegally withholding information about how it plans to spend its windfall from President Donald Trump’s tax overhaul. The Communications Workers of America, which is currently in negotiations over contracts covering 14,000 AT&T employees, said in a complaint filed Friday that the company is violating the federal labor law that requires firms to provide the unions that represent their staff with information germane to collective bargaining. With the benefit of a lower corporate tax rate, AT&T said in January it expects free cash flow this year to rise by $3.4 billion to $21 billion.
