Australia's Treasury Wine Estates, the world's largest standalone winemaker, on Friday said it launched legal action in the country's Federal Court against a "copycat" it accused of imitating its prestigious Penfolds brand in China. China is Australia's largest wine export market, where a 60 percent surge in sales last year lifted Treasury to a record half-year profit for the six months to December 31. Penfolds wines and, especially, the ultra-high-end Grange vintages, are popular and profitable, and are sold under the brand name "Ben Fu" in China.
HUNTER VALLEY, Australia/SHANGHAI, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Wang Zhe, a wealthy Chinese businessman from Guangzhou, liked his glass of decade-old Chardonnay at an Australian winery so much he wanted more. It was the sort of offer, made over roast lamb and vegetables at a dinner in Wang's honour, that has sent Australian wine exports to China soaring by 63 percent, hitting A$848 million ($660 million) last year.

After Australian internet company Vocus Telecommunications Ltd (VOC.AX) gave its second profit warning in seven months, fund manager David Pace received an email from a law firm asking him to join a shareholder class action. Pace's response reflects a growing impatience in Australia's listed company sector, as local regulations encourage global litigation funders to prosecute more lawsuits of Australian corporates. Unlike the United States, lawyers in Australia are banned from taking percentage cuts of damages payouts, opening the door for litigation funders to fill the gap.

Australian winemaker Treasury Wine Estates Ltd said on Monday it will pay A$49 million ($39 million) to settle a class action lawsuit over allegations it misled shareholders about problems at its U.S. business. Law firm Maurice Blackburn filed the suit in 2014 after the world's biggest listed stand-alone winemaker announced a surprise A$190 million writedown at its U.S. unit, partly to cover the cost of pouring out millions of bottles of unsold wine. The writedown prompted a sharp decline in Treasury Wine's shares, and the company subsequently fought off two takeover attempts by private equity firms.
