What does the Fed's decision not to raise interest rates until 2023 mean for this fund's NAV and yield?

They had some interesting insights about BND on http://Bestplays.uno. Definitely made me think twice about the company.

VTI (60%) and BND (40%). Re-balance once every 2-3 years....
  • H
    How
With interest rates at historic lows how long can BND continue to maintain the current dividend? Over 56% of BND holdings are in treasuries with an avg duration of 6.6 years. Being a neophyte investor please help me understand how, with the 10-year at .654% this will not slowly drive down the benefits of owning this (or any) bond index fund.

This is tracking more than the 10 yr bnd, they are getting paid to extract the most yield they can. The durations and yields are all over the place. I am not an expert investor, but BND looks pretty good to me.

With the Fed going to raise rates in December 2018.
And scheduled for 3 more times in 2019. Investors
might consider only investing in short term bond funds.
Or even CDs now. A one year CD can earn over 2.5>
Whereas BND-very unlikely will achieve that mark

what is the yield on this fund? Does it make up for equity losses?
  • H
    How
Anyone have a good article on the effects of higher rates on bond index funds? Obviously the downward spiral BND has underwent in the past several months speaks for itself however at what point and under what conditions does it flatten out? 1 year, 5 years?
  • T
    Timothy
Note. Bnd has returned with dividends in 2018: -1.95%
In past 365 days returned -1.61%. In past 3 years has
average return of 1.27% per year. Why not just avoid
any risk and get a 1 year CD returning 2.8%? With
Fed raising rates in December and more probably in
2019. WIl this fund return 2.8%? Seems doubtful.

I am neew to Bond Funds. Can anyone in the Yahoo community help me understand how an Intermediate Bond Fund like this fluctuates with: Fed rate changes, the economy in general. I think I know the basics but want to understand a bit more as 50% of my retirement savings is in this fund.

BND has done well for past month.
As of 12.27-total return for year is -.61%
    according to Morningstar. Would
obviously done better in CD's in 2018.

I posted 12 days ago. Just don't see a reason
to be in this fund. So many other-safer alternatives-
with a better return. You can just put monies into
    a 1 year CD and earn 2.7%. Very unlikely-maybe
almost impossible for BND to earn 2.7% in next
    365 days. Caveat Emptor Folks!!

This is the worst change made by Yahoo. If your portfolio has mutual index funds, there is basically no information. I'm taking my portfolio somewhere else.

it looks like 10 yr Bond is now down 0.045 in yahoo but this BND is up 0 .175
    is there any disconnect here????
    Thanks in advance!
