Stocks to watch: Merlin, M&B, Smurfit Kappa, Tesla, HSBC, Verbund

    ● Merlin Entertainments jumped after Valueact, the activist investor that owns 9.3 per cent of the Legoland operator, said in an open letter the company “should evaluate a public to private transaction”. Valueact saw “significant private capital interest in partnering with the company” and argued that it could attract a bid of about 450p a share, a premium of about 30 per cent to the undisturbed price. Analysts highlighted a heavy debt burden and the casting vote of the Kirk Kristiansen family, the Lego founders who own 30 per cent of Merlin.

Volksbank Wien AG -- Moody's assigns Ba2(hyb) rating to Volksbank Wien AG's low trigger AT1 instrument

Moody's Investors Service has assigned a definitive Ba2(hyb) rating to the EUR220 million undated preferred stock non-cumulative "Fixed to Reset Rate Additional Tier 1 Notes of 2019" (ISIN AT000B121991) issued by Volksbank Wien AG (VBW). The Ba2(hyb) rating assigned to VBW's "low trigger" Additional Tier 1 (AT1) securities takes into account the instrument's undated deeply subordinated claim in liquidation, as well as the security's non-cumulative coupon deferral features, and is positioned three notches below VBW's baa2 Adjusted Baseline Credit Assessment (BCA). BASF to cut costs to lift earnings, but growth still slower

BASF (BASFn.DE) will launch cost cuts to boost annual earnings by 2 billion euros (1.78 billion pounds) from 2021 to counter slower profit growth, the German chemicals maker said on Tuesday. Under the programme, BASF said it would aim for 3 to 5 percent annual growth in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) after averaging 8 percent a year since 2012. Moody's provisional ratings, issued in advance of the final issuance, represent its preliminary credit opinion on the proposed notes. VERBUND AG -- Moody's upgrades VERBUND's ratings to Baa1, positive outlook

Moody's Investors Service (Moody's) has today upgraded to Baa1 from Baa2 the senior unsecured ratings of VERBUND AG (Verbund). The rating upgrade recognises Verbund's improved financial profile, as evidenced by the reported 21% growth in EBITDA between H1 2017 and H1 2018 and reflects Moody's expectation that the increased power prices and lower debt will allow the company to maintain financial metrics at or above current levels. As a large fixed-cost hydro power generator, Verbund is particularly sensitive to the changes in wholesale power prices, which have continued a strong rally since the beginning of this year.
