Nice to see today’s action but crazy that the stocks of refiners are falling while crack spreads are increasing.

Lots of refiners are in maintenance as well as unplanned downtime with fires, mechanical breakdowns, etc.

Hope Valero is buying back a lot of stock at these prices.

Markets are behaving as if an impending recession will result in very few people driving ICE vehicles for the near future. I doubt that this will prove true, given rising employment and increasing office attendance. I also don’t believe that the Fed will drive the US economy into a hard recession – they’ve already accomplished much of their goal with talk.
I will also note that, based on a WTI price of $78.74, a gasoline price of $2.40 per gallon and a diesel fuel price of $3.24 per gallon, a refiners crack spread (3-2-1) is still $33.82 per barrel.

A bit off topic. In the uk interest rates are rising, inflation is very high, there is an energy crisis, and the pound is crashing. It is widely believed the uk is already in recession. Given all of these things, why is the ftse only down less than 5% yard? How does a person short the ftse? My preliminary scan showed only uk based etfs.

One positive of refiner stock prices being down and undervalued to what they are worth (extremely undervalued in my opinion) ..... the refining companies are buying back shares with some of all that excess cash they are generating and us shareholders are getting a better value of the stock they buy back at these lower prices and perhaps they are buying back more shares since the shares don't cost as much!

Interesting -- Oil refiners Valero Energy Corp and Marathon Petroleum Corp are the biggest beneficiaries of the U.S. government's oil reserve releases, taking nearly half the crude offered, #MPC #PSX

Looking for input. Does anyone believe the EIA gasoline and distillate fuel supply numbers which they use as a proxy for demand for gasoline and diesel demand in the US which they are saying that over the last 4 week average that gasoline demand in the US is down 8% and distillate demand is down 9% from the same time a year ago? It's hard for me to believe these large numbers. Especially against 2021 when Covid was more of an issue.

90% of my portfolio is oil and gas, mostly gas.... the whole sector grossly undervalued. vlo is one of the core members in this field but my question is:

wtfisgoingon with the stock.... lately my worst performer?!

Somebody blew up the Nord Stream Pipeline in the Baltic Sea, there's a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico shutting down oil production, and OPEC is considering cutting production to prop up oil prices.

Once the four regions of Eastern Ukraine are officially part of Russian territory, any attacks by Ukrainian forces are likely to escalate the scale of weapons used, to include thermobaric, tactical and possibly strategic nuclear weapons. The USA has indicated that the use of “WMDs” (however that is defined) in Ukraine will be met “forcefully,” though perhaps not with nuclear weapons.

    Expected timeline:

By 9/27/22, all referendums for Kherson, Donetsk, Lughansk and Zaporozhye will be completed.

By late night 9/29/22, Russian Duma will accept or reject referendums, making the regions Russian territory.

By late night 9/30/22, President Vladimir Putin will address nation, with either an ultimatum or an outright declaration of war against Ukraine.

Analysts are touting VLO as a $140+ stock. But the price per share keeps dropping. Total disconnect from reality. Don't profits and increased eps mean anything anymore?

IMO, the big $$$ is betting on a dramatic economic slowdown the remainder of the year & next year. It'll take a while to shake-out, but I believe oil/gas will be a necessity & be alright, with nat. gas doing the best.
