Audi won't stock E-Tron models at dealers

Audi's new electric SUV, the E-Tron won't occupy precious floor space at Audi dealers. Instead of filling their yards with pre-configured E-Trons, U.S. Audi dealers will instead handle refundable reservations with $1,000 deposits. This means every U.S. Audi dealer can order a customer an E-Tron without allocation and floorplan expenses being part of the equation.

[$$] Volkswagen to Test Self-Driving Vehicles Virtually

AG (VOW.XE) plans to use computer-simulated test drives to accelerate the development of its autonomous vehicles and reduce time- and resource-intensive hardware tests, it said Monday. Car makers and technology companies are competing in a race to develop algorithms for fully autonomous vehicles, which require large amounts of data for training. According to estimates by MIT research scientist Lex Fridman, Tesla vehicles have traveled roughly 1.5 billion miles with the company’s autopilot system, which offers some autonomous functionality but can also run in the background to collect data.

[$$] Porsche Drops Diesel Engines in Wake of Emissions Scandal

BERLIN—German luxury car maker Porsche AG will no longer offer diesel versions of its cars, the Volkswagen AG unit said Sunday, becoming the first German auto maker to drop the engines in the wake of the emissions-cheating scandal. “As a sports-car maker where diesel has traditionally played an inferior role, we have come to the conviction that we’ll continue without diesel,” Porsche said in a statement. Porsche’s decision highlights a growing trend among premium auto manufacturers to focus resources on the rise of plug-in hybrid and full-battery electric vehicles over the next decade, rather than on developing diesel in face of rising costs of developing combustion engines that meet ever-stricter emissions regulations.

Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) Porsche will stop offering diesel versions of its cars, the unit said on Sunday, sharpening its focus on hybrid and battery-powered vehicles instead. Volkswagen has admitted to deliberately cheating diesel emissions tests, sending shockwaves through the automotive industries and causing a sector-wide crackdown on polluting diesel engines. As a result, carmakers around the world have ramped up spending on the development of electric cars, hoping to catch up with pioneer Tesla (TLSA.O).

2020 Lamborghini Huracan Spyder getting Performante looks

The Lamborghini Huracán has been around since the 2015 model year, and has been pretty much unchanged with the exception of a slightly restyled rear-drive variant. Lamborghini seems to think it's about time the Huracán was updated, since one of our spy photographers caught a new version in light camouflage out testing. It appears the new model borrows heavily from the Huracán Performante.

Foot to the floor, I glance at the speedometer. It reads 74 miles per hour. Incredulous, I thumb the button on my two-way radio and inquire from the van behind me how fast we're going. "About 75," I hear through the walkie.

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ First Drive Review | Worth its weight in carbon fiber

If we were to define Lamborghini in 2018, this is the word we'd choose. Led by the indefatigable head of research and development, Maurizio Reggiani, the engineering team at Sant'Agata Bolognese are constantly iterating current models — futzing, enhancing, testing. The Aventador has been one of those problems.

VW rejects Trump envoy's take on Iran pullout

U.S. sanctions against Iran, introduced by President Trump after his decision to pull the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal, have forced companies in Germany and across Europe to reconsider their investments there. Ambassador Richard Grenell has appeared to take credit for this shift in a series of tweets and interviews over the past weeks, announcing the withdrawal of German blue chips like Siemens (SIEGn.DE), BASF (BASFn.DE) and now Volkswagen, to the surprise of the companies themselves.

VW's MAN Sticks to Lofty Margin Goal Ahead of Possible Truck IPO

Volkswagen AG’s MAN unit is sticking to a profitability target it fell short of for years amid painful cost-cutting, underscoring the ambitious goal of the German automaker’s truck division to generate industry-leading returns as it prepares for a possible share sale. MAN still aims to generate an operating profit margin of about 8 percent even as some business areas like smaller vehicles or buses are unlikely to achieve that level, Chief Executive Officer Joachim Drees said Wednesday in an interview at the biannual commercial vehicle show in Hanover, Germany. “I do want to have aspiring targets -- we might not get there in some areas, but what’s more important is that the whole organization adopts a mindset that constantly tries to make things better,” Drees said.

U.S. Says Volkswagen to Leave Iran in Symbolic Win for Trump

Renault, VW and Fiat Chrysler sales surged before stiffer EU emissions tests

Renault, Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and Fiat Chrysler led a 29.8 percent European car sales surge last month, the main regional industry body said, as automakers used discounts to clear inventory ahead of tougher emissions tests. Registrations across Europe rose to 1.17 million cars, well above usual levels for the slow month of August and the 902,870 achieved in the same month last year, Brussels-based ACEA said on Wednesday. The tougher new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test (WLTP) became mandatory on Sept. 1, forcing carmakers including Renault and Volkswagen to halt deliveries of some model versions that had yet to be re-certified for emissions.

German Car Makers Investigated Over ‘Possible Collusion’ on Emissions Technology

BRUSSELS—The European Union’s antitrust body has opened a formal investigation into “possible collusion” among Germany’s big car makers to limit the development of technology that would reduce harmful exhaust emissions. The European Commission, the bloc’s antitrust regulator, said Tuesday the probe stems from inspections it conducted in October 2017 at the premises of BMW AG, Daimler AG, Volkswagen AG and its Audi subsidiary. The probe comes in the wake of several scandals regarding European car manufacturers cheating on emissions testing.
