Tech Today: Can Tesla Make Cars? Cheers for ZS, Energous Soars

Here are some things going on today in the world of tech: Shares of wireless power startup Energous (WATT) are up $2.83, or over 17%, at $19.48, after the company said late yesterday the Federal Communications Commission has certified the company’s “near-field transmitter” for “contact-based charging." That technology lets power a gadget by placing it against a plate that sends energy to it via electromagnetic waves, without having to physically insert a plug. The last time the company got an FCC approval, in December, there was plenty of controversy surrounding what exactly that meant for the company. Goldman Sachs’s David Tamberrino reiterated a Sell rating on the stock, writing that the company’s announcement last week that it produced 2,000 of its “Model 3” car in the final week of the March quarter — an important achievement in the eyes of the bulls — is something of a head fake.

Tech Today: Qualcomm Puts Sale 'On the Table,' Arista Plunges, Facebook Warned

Here are some things going on today in your world of tech: Shares of Qualcomm (QCOM) are down 7 cents at $65.21, after the company this morning said its board of directors, after meeting with Broadcom (AVGO) management this Wednesday, repeated its comment from week’s ago, namely that Broadcom’s offer to buy Qualcomm for $82 in cash and stock undervalues Qualcomm. Qualcomm chairman Paul Jacobs, however, also took exception to what he described as Broadcom’s intention to take control of Qualcomm’s licensing business, if the two should sign a deal, before the deal closes. Jacobs said Qualcomm is still open to “further talks." Nothing thus far from Broadcom on the matter, as far as I can see.

One of the hottest stocks in the market over the past several days has been wireless power developer Energous Corp (NASDAQ:WATT). Well, in late 2017, it became much more than an idea.  On December 26, Energous announced that it had finally received FCC approval of its WattUp Mid Field transmitter.
