Largest asset owners are critical to aiding society’s biggest issues

The Asset Owner 100 (AO100) — the world’s 100 biggest asset owners — account for $19 trillion, up 1.7% from last year, according to research from the Thinking Ahead Institute. In its second study of the AO100, the Thinking Ahead Institute highlights the unique position universal owners have to direct capital in a sustainable way, making a significantly positive impact on issues, including climate change. “The major investment markets failed to make progress in 2018 around their equity and bond returns, but these funds, in many cases, were able to avoid losing ground against their longer-term targets by sensible diversification — in particular, into private markets,” said Roger Urwin, global head of content at the Thinking Ahead Institute.

North American commercial insurance buyers can expect 2020 rate increases — many sizable — for more lines than in recent years

North American commercial insurance buyers will face sizable price increases in 2020, across most lines of insurance, according to Willis Towers Watson’s (WLTW) 2020 Insurance Marketplace Realities. While Willis Towers Watson reports that capacity is available in all but the most challenged lines, underwriters are showing unprecedented discipline in its deployment, especially for risks they find perilous. Overall, with buyers sitting squarely in a seller’s market, 19 lines are expected to see price increases according to the report, with property, umbrella, and public company directors and officers (D&O) experiencing the most widespread hikes (20% and higher) and capacity withdrawals.

LSE CFO to Retire as Exchange Moves to Complete Refinitiv Deal

(Bloomberg) -- London Stock Exchange Group Plc, fresh from spurning an unsolicited bid from Hong Kong, will start a global search to replace its chief financial officer as it presses ahead with a deal for data firm Refinitiv.Chief Financial Officer David Warren will retire by the end of 2020 once the bourse’s $27 billion transaction for Refinitiv completes, the firm said alongside better than expected third-quarter results Friday. He spent eight years at the firm including a short spell as interim CEO before David Schwimmer’s appointment. Shares climbed as much as 1.6% in early London trading.LSE faced an unwelcome distraction last month when Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Ltd. tabled a surprise takeover, taking Schwimmer away from ironing out the details of his own deal announced in August. HKEX abandoned its approach after a stern rebuke from the U.K. company and a cool reception from Beijing.Instead, the London exchange is betting on a future driven by data, shifting away from the lumpy revenues generated by volatile stock trading. For the third quarter, LSE reported a 12% rise in total income to 587 million pounds ($754 million), helped by 19% growth at its LCH clearing business. The figure was above the 565 million-pound consensus estimate of 10 analysts provided by the company.LSE said it has hired David Shalders, a former Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc and Willis Towers Watson Plc executive, to keep the Refinitiv takeover on track to complete by the end of 2020. The regulatory approvals process is underway, it said.(Adds detail on Warren retirement in second paragraph.)To contact the reporter on this story: Viren Vaghela in London at vvaghela1@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Ambereen Choudhury at achoudhury@bloomberg.net, Marion DakersFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.
