Walmart's Charts Have a Lot in Store

I have seen several articles in business publications on the consumer trading down in their product sourcing, because of inflation. Two interesting observations about the sideways trend in price: one is that trading volume does not contract and the second is that the On-Balance-Volume (OBV) line continues to rise the past twelve months. In this daily Point and Figure chart of WMT, below, I can see that the software is projecting an upside price target in the $191 area.

Retailers battle for uncertain back-to-school demand after ‘volatile’ quarter

Stocking shelves with low-priced notebooks and slashing prices on sneakers and uniforms, major retailers including Walmart, Foot Locker and Marks & Spencer are preparing for a challenging back-to-school shopping season this year. U.S. shoppers' spending in the summer ahead of the college and K-12 school year has grown steadily since 2015, according to the National Retail Federation, a trade group. Although shoppers have been spending on essentials this year, they’re much choosier on where to splurge as inflation remains stubbornly high, executives from Ulta, Macy's, Ralph Lauren and Nordstrom said during earnings results over the last two weeks.

I'm Placing Bets on a Couple of Giants to Lose Ground in the Coming Months

The rally was broad-based for a change with the Russell 2000 up 3.6% on the day and beaten-down sectors such as energy rallying strongly as well. One catalyst for the rally was a strong May jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that showed 339,000 jobs created last month, far above the 190,000 expected. Regardless, it was good to see a rally with some breadth to end the trading week.

Retailers are shedding warehouse space and paring back their logistics networks now that the disruptions that slowed supply chains during the Covid-19 pandemic have largely receded and consumer spending patterns are shifting toward services. Walmart reiterates goal of doubling international gross merchandise in 5 years

Walmart still expects to double the amount of gross merchandise volume it sells in foreign markets to $200 billion in five years, a top executive at the retailer said on Friday, even as the global economy remains on shaky ground. Gross merchandise volume (GMV) measures the total value of all goods sold through a platform or marketplace, which in Walmart's case includes its Cashi digital payments app platform in Mexico and Flipkart marketplace in India. The analysts meeting and a press presentation by Walmart CEO Doug McMillon were held on Friday in conjunction with the retailer's annual shareholders meeting in Bentonville.
