An upbeat earnings report from chip foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing provided a boost to chip-gear makers, including ASML.
Shares of chip manufacturing giant Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) are up $1.06, or 2%, at $44.19, after the company this morning reported Q4 profit that topped expectations and a forecast for this quarter’s revenue just slightly below consensus, which should all be music to chip investors’ ears, according to a first pass by Mehdi Hosseini of Susquehanna. Today’s report follows a robust outlook for chips yesterday by chip equipment maker AMSL (ASML) that boosted chip and chip equipment stocks. Hosseini, looking over the results, notes the company expects the semiconductor industry overall to rise in revenue terms by 6% to 8% this year.

"Due to industry strength, some customers requested earlier shipments of their lithography systems," Chief Executive Peter Wennink said in a statement.
AMSTERDAM/FRANKFURT, Jan 17 (Reuters) - ASML, a leading supplier of equipment to the world's biggest chipmakers, reported fourth-quarter net profit that far exceeded expectations after some customers requested early delivery of products to satisfy booming demand. Shares of chip equipment maker ASML (ASML) are up $10.46, or almost 6%, at $ $196.80, after the company this morning reported Q4 revenue and earnings that topped analysts’ expectations, though it forecast revenue this quarter below nonsense, and announced it will buy back up to €2.5 billion of its shares through next year, and said it intends to boost its buyback by 17%. The results are having a nice effect on ASML’s peers, with Applied Materials (AMAT), Lam Research (LRCX), and KLA-Tencor (KLAC) all getting a lift this morning. Reading the tea leaves broadly, Jefferies & Co.’s equipment analyst Masahiro Nakanomyo writes that “the overall market should sustain brisk growth in 2018.” Nakanomyo observes that “customers are requesting early shipment." Although Nakanomyo anticipates "a pace correction at some point” in the equipment market, nevertheless "memory prices and semiconductor company profits remain high, supporting the continuation of forward investment." And so, “the market appears poised for continued YoY growth in 2018,” writes Nakanomyo.
