BMW to recall 11,700 cars after installing wrong engine software

German carmaker BMW (BMWG.DE) said on Friday it would recall 11,700 cars to fix their engine management software after it discovered that the wrong programming had been installed on its luxury 5- and 7-Series models. "In the course of internal tests, the BMW Group has discovered that a correctly developed software update was mistakenly assigned to certain unsuitable model-versions," the company said in a statement. BMW issued the statement after a report in news weekly Der Spiegel suggested it had installed software that manipulated emissions of harmful gases such as nitrogen oxide, something its management has always denied.

In the first case of its kind, the U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday said BMW Financial Services NA violated the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act by having since August 2011 refused to reimburse so-called capitalized cost reductions to service members who ended their leases early. BMW's payout includes $2.17 million to compensate the 492 service members, plus $60,788 to the U.S. Treasury. Capitalized cost reductions are upfront payments made to reduce monthly lease payments, and typically amount to thousands of dollars.

Luxury auto brands adopt new strategies as the old run out of gas

Success in the United States used to come easily for German automaker BMW AG (BMWG.DE), whose sporty sedans in three sizes would be snapped up by affluent consumers. The premium auto business has now become more complicated, as illustrated by the BMW models displayed at this week's Los Angeles auto show, amid a backdrop of heavy spending by luxury auto brands on new models and technology as they make awkward leaps from a predictable past to an uncertain future. On one side of BMW's display stood a prototpye of a large X7 sport utility vehicle, a vehicle that was unthinkable in its lineup a few years ago when the top of the line was still defined as a large sedan.
