China's real endgame in the trade war runs through Europe

China's growing largess among distressed European nations like Hungary and Greece is giving it growing leverage over EU decision making. As trade tensions play out, the unanticipated shocks of greater U.S. unpredictability and greater Chinese assertiveness are creating deeper European divisions about how to navigate it all. With its efforts to influence, China weakens Western unity (and U.S. attraction) and improves its image as an alternative to liberal democracy.

EDP sees merits in Chinese suitor's plans, but offer too low

EDP-Energias de Portugal sees merits in the plans of suitor China Three Gorges (CTG), it said on Saturday, signalling it may be open to an improved offer after rejecting a 9 billion euro (8 billion pounds) takeover proposal as too low. The board of the Portuguese utility said it could not recommend the current offer from its largest shareholder to other investors, but it would seek more information from CTG. EDP had said on May 15 that CTG's proposal did not adequately reflect the value of the company, indicating it would not back the offer.

Portugal's EDP not subject to management limits under China bid -regulator

EDP-Energias de Portugal will remain under normal management without limitations usually imposed by takeover rules because these do not apply to the bid by the state-owned, unlisted entity China Three Gorges, market regulator CMVM said on Friday. CTG last month offered 9 billion euros (8 billion pounds) for the stake it does not already own in the utility, which is Portugal's largest company by assets. EDP has said it considered the 3.26 euro a share bid too low but is yet to announce its formal stance on the overall offer.

In Portugal, trust in China is the art of the deal

Utility company EDP may balk at the meager 5 percent premium offered for its shares by China Three Gorges (CT) but the battle for Portugal's biggest business has largely played out already. To some it looks like a lowball bid, but Portugal has welcomed the offer because it considers the Chinese firm's pledge to keep EDP-Energias de Portugal intact more important than the price and it wants closer ties with a country that has plowed billions into its economy. The Chinese state-owned hydropower giant became EDP's biggest shareholder in 2011.

Portugal's watchdog waives takeover rule in China Three Gorges EDP bid

Portugal's market watchdog has waived a requirement in its takeover rules that will make it easier for China Three Gorges to pursue its bid for utility EDP-Energias de Portugal (EDP.LS). China Three Gorges, which is EDP's largest shareholder with a 23 percent stake, announced a takeover bid for the rest of the company on May 11, offering a premium of five percent which was widely seen by analysts as too low. The market regulator CMVM said on Wednesday that China Three Gorges is allowed to drop a 50 percent plus one share clause in the takeover rules as long as its bid process runs to its legal conclusion.

An $11 Billion Chinese Deal Risks Dividing Europe

Friday's bid for Portuguese power generator EDP-Energias de Portugal SA by China's biggest clean energy group throws contrasting agendas into stark relief. Lisbon appears intensely relaxed about China Three Gorges Corp.'s 9.1 billion-euro ($11 billion) buyout plan. CTG first invested in the utility in 2012 when the current opposition Social Democratic Party was the part of the ruling coalition.
