The U.S.-listed shares of Volkswagen AG surged 2.6% into record territory in midday trading Thursday, after The Wall Street Journal reported that the German-based automaker was in early discussions regarding a listing of a minority stake in its Porsche subsidiary. Porsche Automobil Holding SE's U.S. stock surged 4.2% toward a 13-month high. Citing people familiar with the matter, the WSJ report said that while discussions over a listing have resurfaced on an off for several years, they have taken a new quality recently. If a listing occurs, it might not happen till next year, the WSJ report said. Volkswagen's stock has rallied 17.6% over the past three months and Porsche shares have climbed 11.6%, while the iShares MSCI Germany ETF has gained 8.2% and the S&P 500 has advanced 9.2%.
Nearby resistance suggests that the bulls could start to lose conviction in European equities, pushing prices significantly lower.
