British consumer sentiment fell back this month as households grew more worried about their finances and remained gloomy about the outlook for the economy, according to a long-running survey by market research company GfK. The headline gauge of consumer confidence, compiled by market research firm GfK for the European Commission, fell to -9 from a 10-month high of -7 in March. The median forecast for the GfK survey in a Reuters poll of economists had pointed to another reading of -7.
Consumers in Britain were their most confident in 10 months in March, according to a survey which suggested that they took comfort from a fall in inflation and this month's Brexit transition deal. The headline gauge of consumer confidence, compiled by market research firm GfK for the European Commission, rose to -7 from -10 in February. "The prospect of wage rises finally outstripping declining inflation, high levels of employment with low-level interest rates, and finally some movement on the Brexit front appear to have boosted our spirits," Joe Staton, head of experience innovation UK at GfK, said in a statement.
GfK researcher Rolf Buerkl pointed to the political uncertainty since last year's inconclusive federal election as a factor behind the drop in all three components of the indicator. The GfK survey was conducted from Jan. 26 to Feb. 9, mainly during ongoing coalition talks between Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and the Social Democrats (SPD), which resulted in an agreement on Feb. 7. GfK's subindex measuring income expectations fell 3 points on the month to a three-month low of 53.8, while consumers' propensity to buy dropped by 4.1 points to 56.3 which was the lowest since July.
