Austria Gets Close To Russia with Surprise Gas Deal

Austria has moved to acquire Russian oil and gas assets, to the chagrin of some of its European neighbors. This transaction is a capitulation of a long asset swap dispute with Norway over OMV's Norwegian assets, which were originally earmarked to be swapped with Gazprom back in 2016.

Germany says Russian gas pipeline needed to ensure supply

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is important to secure German energy supplies and Russia is a safe and reliable provider, Thomas Bareiss, Germany's state secretary for energy, said. U.S. President Donald Trump has said the project increases reliance on Russian gas and has warned Western firms invested in it that they are at risk of sanctions. Gas is due to start flowing to Europe through the pipeline at the end of 2019 and will allow Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM) to stop piping gas via Ukraine where it has clashed with authorities over pricing and other issues for years.

[$$] Europe’s LNG Success Is U.S. Opportunity, Russia Challenge

European efforts to import more liquefied natural gas are starting to pay off, moving the region further away from Russia’s energy orbit and potentially creating more opportunities for U.S. producers. Shifting to LNG has been a significant turning point for countries such as Lithuania and Poland, whose energy bills have fallen since they built LNG terminals in 2014 and 2016, respectively. The new LNG terminals on the Baltic Sea, Russia’s former backyard, are expected to prompt the opening of other European facilities that can turn to shipments of natural gas from places like the U.S. and Qatar, industry experts said.

Russia's Growing Footprint Looms at Gastech Conference in Barcelona This Week

As the Gastech conference begins this week in Barcelona, we focus on the geopolitically charged issue of increasing Russian exports of gas to Europe. With the U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA) announcing that the U.S. has exceeded Russia's crude oil production for the first time since 1999, tensions between the U.S. and Russia continue on the back of last week's meeting between U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Alexander Novak, the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation. Perry has warned that Moscow can no longer use energy as an economic weapon and that potential sanctions could come for building the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

How Did Russia’s Gas Goliath Get Beaten by Its David?

Imagine a decade from now, U.S. giant Exxon Mobil Corp. has been knocked from its perch as the world’s largest oil company by its rival from tiny Portugal -- about 20 times smaller. It seems unlikely, but something equally strange has just happened in Russia. State-run Gazprom PJSC -- the world’s biggest natural gas producer -- was surpassed in market capitalization by the much smaller Novatek PJSC.

Nord Stream 2 pipeline on track despite sanctions risk, operator says

MOSCOW/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The Nord Stream 2 pipeline to transport Russian gas to Germany is progressing on schedule, its operator said on Friday, with European investors still committed to the project despite criticism from the United States and the threat of sanctions. Berlin and Moscow have been at odds since Russia annexed Crimea four years ago, but they have a common interest in the Nord Stream 2 project. The pipeline will allow Russia to bypass Ukraine, where its gas giant Gazprom has faced past disruptions.

Russia's Gazprom says takes pause on external debt market over legal risks

Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM) said on Friday it was taking a pause in using some of its debt tools but the gas giant said it had not suspended its loans programme and still had access to private loans. Gazprom suspended its external borrowing programme this year because of a deepening legal dispute with Ukraine's Naftogaz over gas supplies, banking sources said this month. A London court in June froze the firm's assets in Britain at the request of Naftogaz.

Polish gas company PGNiG could increase network investment

Polish gas company PGNiG (PGN.WA) expects to spend more than 7.5 billion zlotys (1.54 billion pounds) on its distribution network by 2022, its chief executive said, after shareholders recently voted in favour of investment over dividends. In a vote on July 20, shareholders of the state-controlled company, Poland's dominant gas provider, voted to allocate 2017 net profit to reserve funds, freeing it up to be used for investment. "As long as our owners will not require dividends, we will certainly invest in distribution, even over the figure of 7.5 billion over the period by 2022," Chief Executive Piotr Wozniak told a conference call with analysts.
