IHG relies heavily on corporate demand but has been slow to adjust to the changing travel landscape as holidaymakers and business travellers increasingly opt for cheaper accommodation offered by the likes of Airbnb and HomeAway. IHG, which owns the Crowne-Plaza and Holiday Inn brands among others, posted a 1 percent rise in third-quarter global revenue per available room, well short of the 6 percent growth reported by French rival AccorHotels (ACCP.PA) on Thursday. Revenue per available room in Greater China was up 4.8 percent as new rooms openings lifted its capacity in the country to 19,000 rooms, up 70 percent from a year earlier.
Britain's top share index fell on Friday, led by Intercontinental Hotels Group after disappointing results and budget airline EasyJet Plc following a broker downgrade amid growing gloom in the travel sector. The FTSE 100 reversed earlier gains and was down 0.3 percent by 0926 GMT. Topping the FTSE 100 losers, InterContinental's weaker-than-expected revenue added to the downbeat mood and stirred concerns about the cooling travel sector, even after the hotel chain said it would return 500 million euro ($572 million) to shareholders through a special dividend.
InterContinental Hotels Group on Friday cheered bumper demand from tourists for London rooms and vowed to dish up a $500 million payout for investors. The FTSE 100 firm behind the Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza chains said revenue per available room in the capital rose 3.6% in the third quarter. Finance boss Paul Edgecliffe-Johnson said the firm’s famous Park Lane hotel had its strongest-ever summer.

IHG, which opened its first hotel in China in 1984, is expanding in the world's second largest economy in expectation of further rises in spending by middle class and high-end Chinese travellers.

Walt Disney World’s newest mixed-use development has become a hotbed for hotel rooms — raising the plan from four new properties to six. Plans filed earlier this month with Orange County show a pair of hotels totaling 321 rooms may be coming to 18 vacant acres just south of Flamingo Crossings, a master-planned Disney development with apartments, shops and hotels. It’s unknown who will develop the two new hotels. Site plans for the new project show a new 173-room, eight-story Holiday Inn Resort and a 148-room Hyatt House split between two multistory buildings, which will share swimming pools, a patio area and other amenities.

A new hotel is moving forward in the quaint town of Safety Harbor. KOS Corp. Investments Ltd., the owner of the Oakbrook Plaza shopping center, filed the plans with the Southwest Florida Water Management District for a Candlewood Suites Extended Stay hotel on an existing 1.62-acre site in the plaza at the intersection of Enterprise and McMullen Booth roads. A hotel development has been in the plans since the early 2000s to convert an old 58,209-square-foot office building on the property, but the plans have received negative feedback from residents who think an extended stay hotel is unnecessary and would hurt property values.
The deal includes more than 85 properties under the Joie de Vivre, Thompson Hotels, Destination Hotels, tommie, and Alila Hotels & Resorts brands.
