Daimler Trucks North America will cut 900 workers at two Freightliner plants in North Carolina as tepid orders for new heavy- and medium-duty trucks persist following a record ordering binge in 2018. Freightliner, which holds a commanding lead in market share over its competitors, is the fourth of six major truck makers to curtail production. "Following a red-hot North American truck market of record sales and production volumes over the last 12 months, the market is now clearly returning to normal market levels," DTNA said in a statement.
The company is reinvesting more than $300 million dollars into research and development and embedded software for its trucks.
Truck manufacturers are pushing full steam ahead into connected vehicle platforms, using telematics and data integration to drive value for customers while providing countless other benefits for partners, the community and the OEMs themselves. Paccar Inc (NASDAQ: PCAR) started its digital transformation journey in 2015 with a remote diagnostics platform, said Jamin Swazo, director of marketing, Kenworth Trucks. The company has since expanded from a Paccar engine-only platform to a Cummins engine platform and more recently a connected system for its medium-duty trucks.
"The number one benefit of buying a trailer is CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) compliance because you are in control of it," Todd Amen, president and chief executive officer of the owner-operator financial services company ATBS said. "A leased owner-operator owning his or her own trailer," Amen stated, "can expect to earn 3 cents to 12 cents per mile more, with the average being about 6 cents.
PACCAR Inc’s Board of Directors today declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of thirty-two cents per share, payable on December 3, 2019, to stockholders of record at the close of business on November 12, 2019.
"Due to the cyclical nature of the business, we will be reducing line rates at our Springfield [Ohio] Assembly Plant," spokeswoman Lyndi McMillan told FreightWaves on Wednesday, August 15. The cutbacks are in Class 5-7 medium-duty trucks, whose industry-wide inventories are ballooning even as retail sales are up 6 percent year to date through June, according to ACT Research. The issue is a 30 percent increase in inventory – 55,400 unsold medium-duty trucks in June compared to 42,700 the same month in 2018.
With several manufacturers producing top-of-the-line Class 8 trucks, the question must be asked, which one is the best bang for the buck? Between Mack, Freightliner, Peterbilt and Kenworth, there are many Class 8 trucks on the market. Owned by PACCAR Inc (NASDAQ: PCAR) and with over 90 years of experience in the industry, Kenworth, although biased, considers itself "the world's best." However, thousands of owner-operators have labeled Kenworth as the maker of the ideal owner-operator vehicle.

The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Aug. 6 announced a $1.7 million settlement agreement with Bellevue, Wash.-based PACCAR (NASDAQ: PCAR) to settle allegations that the truck maker's European subsidiary illegally engaged in the sale of 63 trucks from Europe to Iran between October 2013 and February 2015. According to OFAC, DAF Trucks in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, sells trucks through a network of more than 300 independent dealers.
New truck orders in July fell to their lowest level since 2010, more evidence that a trucking sector recession is taking hold. FTR Transportation Intelligence reported preliminary orders of 9,800 units. ...
