    The son of an Indian gold mine owner in Burkina Faso, who was kidnapped by unidentified assailants in 2018, has been released, his father said on Monday. Kimar Akoliya, whose father Akoliya Patel owns the Ghana-based Balaji mining group, had set off for Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou, from the remote Inata mine with two colleagues when they disappeared in September 2018.

    Semafo says Boungou mine operations not expected to restart this year

    Canadian gold miner Semafo Inc said on Monday it does not expect to restart operations at its Boungou Mine in Burkina Faso this year after a deadly attack on a convoy of buses carrying its employees last month forced it to suspend operations. Burkina Faso is struggling to combat surging Islamist violence in its remote eastern and northern scrublands. Sefamo said any restart plan will require the government to increase the security of the public road to Boungou as well as in the region.

    Relatives of people killed and survivors from an attack this week on a bus convoy of mine workers in Burkina Faso were increasingly angry on Saturday at what they said was a lack of support from authorities and the mining company. Hundreds of relatives, friends and colleagues of the victims waited for hours to recover their bodies from a morgue in the capital Ouagadougou, as a procession of vehicles made its way to cemeteries across the city. Authorities said 38 people were killed in the attack, one of the deadliest in years in the West African country.

    Australian mining services provider Perenti Global Ltd said on Friday that 19 of its employees were among the more than three dozen people killed in the ambush of a convoy ferrying hundreds of workers near a Canadian-owned mine in Burkina Faso. Gold miner Semafo Inc said five of its buses with a military escort came under fire on Wednesday on the road to its Boungou mine in the eastern region of Est. Perenti said 20 of its employees were also hospitalised in the attack.

    Thirty-seven civilians were killed and more than 60 wounded when gunmen ambushed a convoy transporting workers of Canadian gold miner Semafo in eastern Burkina Faso, regional authorities said on Wednesday. The attack is the deadliest in recent years as the military struggles to contain Islamist violence that has overrun parts of Burkina Faso, located in west Africa. Semafo tightened security last year following armed incidents near two of its mines in the country.
