The U.S. telecom sector is undergoing a dramatic shift as major carriers work toward bringing 5G technology to the markets. Touted as a game changer, 5G technology is expected to significantly improve internet surfing speeds and the data transfer process. Major players in the telecom industry, including AT&T (NYSE:T) and Verizon (VZ), are testing their 5G offerings and plan to launch them in select U.S. cities as early as the end of this year.
While its peers in the telecommunications space are making big moves into new markets with headline acquisitions, Verizon Communications Inc. ( VZ) has been relatively quiet. "Fundamentals in U.S. wireless have turned the corner," wrote Deutsche Bank analyst Matthew Niknam in a note responding to Verizon's most recent quarterly results posted July 24. In the second quarter, investors applauded Verizon for posting earnings above the Street's estimates while growing overall revenue, including gains in wireless, despite the industry suffering from a long-lasting price war.
Tech's once-a-decade race for mobile superiority has been renewed as 5G begins to take shape. Qualcomm (QCOM), AT&T (T), and Intel (INTC) are among the mega-corporations that have been taking turns showing off their 5G development efforts. At the same show, Qualcomm touted technologies with esoteric titles such as “Massive Mimo” and “scalable O.F.D.M.-based air interface.” Qualcomm executives like Durga Malladi, a senior vice president for engineering and the GM for 4G/5G, call 5G the company's "wireless edge." Qualcomm recently gave Barron's a sneak peek of a forthcoming blog post articulating its transformation to the new standard, shorthand for fifth-generation wireless technology.
Like “Black Panther” before it, “Crazy Rich Asians” has generated excitement among minority moviegoers that has translated into ticket sales at the box office.
COLUMBIA, S.C., Aug. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- At AT&T1, we've invested nearly $750 million in our South Carolina wireless and wired networks during 2015-2017. In 2017 alone, AT&T made over 1,400 wireless network upgrades in South Carolina. "AT&T has been a tremendous asset to our state for a long time and has shown its willingness to invest in our communities and the people of South Carolina," said Gov. Henry McMaster.
Dish Network (DISH) is still losing customers due to cord-cutting, as its latest quarter results showed. However, the company’s streaming service Sling TV is a bright spot in its second-quarter results. There are now more than 2.3 million Sling TV subscribers after the service gained 41,000 customers in the second quarter.
T-Mobile (TMUS) added 91,000 net prepaid customers in the second quarter of 2018, which represents a significant sequential fall of 54% from 199,000 customers added in the first quarter. As you can see in the above chart, T-Mobile’s prepaid customer additions have been slowing down for the past six months as more people are qualifying for postpaid plans. In the second quarter, T-Mobile’s prepaid churn rate improved sequentially and YoY (year-over-year).
Charter Communications (CHTR) has maintained consistent capital expenditure to improve its network. This year, Charter restarted all-digital projects in Bright House and Time Warner Cable markets. The company has been aggressively deploying 1 Gbps (gigabit per second) speeds via DOCSIS 3.1 technology across its footprint.
As 21st Century Fox (FOX) nears the closing of its deal to sell most of its entertainment operations to Walt Disney (DIS), the shape of the remaining Fox is starting to emerge. During its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call on August 9, Fox’s leadership hinted that live sports and news programming are expected to be the cornerstones of the slimmed-down Fox. Fox agreed to sell most of its entertainment assets, including the movie production business, to Disney for $71.3 billion.
Sprint (S) has been trying to maintain a lower churn rate and retain customers amid a highly competitive telecom sector. In the fiscal first quarter of 2018, its postpaid phone customer churn rate improved to 1.55%, which was better than Q4 2017 at 1.68% but higher than 1.5% in Q2 2017.
