Daily Spotlight: Inflation (May Be) Stabilizing at High RatesMainstream measures of inflation are elevated as the Federal Reserve has started to pull back the support it provided for the economy during the early phases of the pandemic. We track 21 inflation measures on a monthly basis. On average, they are indicating that prices are rising at an 8.2% year-over-year rate. Drilling down to core inflation (which we obtain by averaging Core CPI, market-based PCE Ex-Food & Energy, the core GDP PCE Price Index, the five-year forward inflation expectation rate and the 10-year TIPs Break-even Interest Rate) our reading is 4.3%, down from 4.5% last month. We note some movement among indicators. For example, deep in the production pipeline, the PPI for Final Demand is now 11.0%, down slightly from 11.2% last month. While consumers can't really detect differences in pricing from the PPI, we note that the rate of increase in average hourly earnings last month was 6.3%, down from 6.8% in the prior month, and the one-year forward inflation expectation rate is now 6.3%, down from 6.6%. Investors are expecting that the Fed's series of rate hikes will ultimately corral inflation, with the five-year forward expectation rate now down to 2.4%.
