Food truck evolution: Owners strategize as novelty wears off

Starting a food truck to sell tacos or barbecue on downtown streets may seem easy or fun, but owners are finding they need more sophisticated plans now that the novelty has worn off. A culinary fad a decade ago, food trucks have lost some luster and even new ones may not draw a crowd. Jack and Max Barber started a food truck called Mainely Burgers in 2012, selling burgers and fries at the beach in Scarborough, Maine, and the next year added a second truck in Portland and an ice cream truck.

Amazon cuts Whole Foods prices for Prime members in new grocery showdown

On Wednesday, Whole Foods debuted a much-anticipated loyalty program that offers special discounts to Prime customers, including 10 percent off hundreds of sale items and rotating weekly specials such as $10 per pound off wild-caught halibut steaks. Amazon previously announced free two-hour delivery from Whole Foods stores for members of Prime, its subscription club with fast shipping and video streaming. The new loyalty strategy will test whether Amazon's $13.7 billion deal for Whole Foods brings much-feared disruption and an intensified price war to the $800 billion U.S. grocery industry dominated by Walmart Inc (WMT.N) and Kroger Co (KR.N).

Outrage breaks out after Whole Foods partners with Yellow Fever eatery

Amazon.com's Whole Foods Market sparked social media outrage after its newest store in its 365 grocery chain partnered with an Asian restaurant with the racially charged name of Yellow Fever. The independently owned and operated eatery - whose name is taken from the slang term for a white man's sexual attraction to Asian women - is located in the 365 store that opened in Long Beach, California, on Wednesday. "An Asian 'bowl' resto called YELLOW FEVER in the middle of whitest Whole Foods — is this taking back of a racist image or colonized mind?" Columbia University professor and author Marie Myung-Ok Lee, wrote on Twitter.

Will Amazon.com, Inc. Really Buy Target Corporation? Yes!

In my opinion, one of the most reasonable ideas being tossed around is that surging digital retail giant Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) buys struggling brick-and-mortar retail giant Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT). In fact, I think its extremely likely (greater than 80%) that Amazon buys Target within the next 3-5 years. The idea of AMZN buying Target was first put forth by Loup Ventures’ Gene Munster.

    New brands ditch Whole Foods

Whole Foods has branded itself as a supporter of mom-and-pop food vendors and was once the go-to testing ground for local natural food brands.
