NEW YORK (AP) — When Toys R Us closed its doors, customers mourned the loss of a beloved brand that conjured memories of their own childhood.
Starting a food truck to sell tacos or barbecue on downtown streets may seem easy or fun, but owners are finding they need more sophisticated plans now that the novelty has worn off. A culinary fad a decade ago, food trucks have lost some luster and even new ones may not draw a crowd. Jack and Max Barber started a food truck called Mainely Burgers in 2012, selling burgers and fries at the beach in Scarborough, Maine, and the next year added a second truck in Portland and an ice cream truck.
On Wednesday, Whole Foods debuted a much-anticipated loyalty program that offers special discounts to Prime customers, including 10 percent off hundreds of sale items and rotating weekly specials such as $10 per pound off wild-caught halibut steaks. Amazon previously announced free two-hour delivery from Whole Foods stores for members of Prime, its subscription club with fast shipping and video streaming. The new loyalty strategy will test whether Amazon's $13.7 billion deal for Whole Foods brings much-feared disruption and an intensified price war to the $800 billion U.S. grocery industry dominated by Walmart Inc (WMT.N) and Kroger Co (KR.N).
Amazon.com's Whole Foods Market sparked social media outrage after its newest store in its 365 grocery chain partnered with an Asian restaurant with the racially charged name of Yellow Fever. The independently owned and operated eatery - whose name is taken from the slang term for a white man's sexual attraction to Asian women - is located in the 365 store that opened in Long Beach, California, on Wednesday. "An Asian 'bowl' resto called YELLOW FEVER in the middle of whitest Whole Foods — is this taking back of a racist image or colonized mind?" Columbia University professor and author Marie Myung-Ok Lee, wrote on Twitter.

CHICAGO (AP) — Five years after the largest mass closure of public schools in an American city, Chicago is forging ahead with a plan to shutter four more in one of the city's highest-crime and most impoverished areas.
Amazon has tapped into America's convenience culture. The company has struck gold with services that allow for maximum convenience at a low cost.
In my opinion, one of the most reasonable ideas being tossed around is that surging digital retail giant Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) buys struggling brick-and-mortar retail giant Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT). In fact, I think its extremely likely (greater than 80%) that Amazon buys Target within the next 3-5 years. The idea of AMZN buying Target was first put forth by Loup Ventures’ Gene Munster.
A quick Google search of articles related to Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) stock in the past week reveals just how bullish Wall Street is on Amazon stock these days. One offers “10 Reasons to Buy Amazon Stock — And Consider Never Selling.” Another claims it is “Almost Impossible to Find a Bear on Amazon Stock.” One more simply states a fact, that “Amazon Shares Break Out to New High as Optimism Stays Strong.” Few stocks elicit as much universal positivity as AMZN, and with good reason. Furthermore, Amazon’s profits — which for years ranged from fleeting to non-existent — are accelerating.
That’s a crazy number, and based on one venture capitalist's prediction, the company may make an acquisition that would move the needle even further.
Industry experts believe Amazon could be eyeing a sprawling list of potential acquisitions in 2018 and beyond, ranging from Lyft to Costco to Wayfair.
Whole Foods has branded itself as a supporter of mom-and-pop food vendors and was once the go-to testing ground for local natural food brands. But since the grocer was acquired by Amazon last year, the natural food maven has not been the same and the changes have pushed food brands to look elsewhere. Yahoo Finance’s Seana Smith, Pras Subramanian, Jen Rogers and Andy Serwer discuss.
On Tuesday, Amazon announced that eligible Prime members using the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card from Chase will earn 5% back on purchases at Whole Foods. Yahoo Finance’s Seana Smith, Dan Roberts, Brittany Jones-Cooper and Penn Financial President Matt McCall discuss the new perks and whether it’s time to get the card.
