In a sunset industry, economics of Adani's Australian coal mine questioned

MELBOURNE/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A crash in Australian thermal coal prices is raising fresh questions about the viability of a controversial $4 billion (3 billion pounds) coal mine just a week ahead of a national election in which climate change is a key issue. Final approval of the Carmichael coal mine in Queensland, owned by India's Adani Enterprises, should come in "a matter of weeks, not months" following nearly a decade on the drawing board, the company's mining chief executive, Lucas Dow, told Reuters last month. Adani has said it is aiming to start producing 10 million tonnes a year of coal from March 2020, but analysts say the target date is optimistic.

Glencore Brings the End of Thermal Coal a Step Closer

It’s only a few months ago that the world’s biggest commodity trader was promoting coal as – don’t laugh – a viable part of global emissions-reduction plans. Now Glencore Plc, the largest supplier of thermal coal to the international market, is promising to cap production for the foreseeable future at around current levels of 145 million metric tons a year, David Stringer of Bloomberg News reported Wednesday. Anglo American Plc attempted to sell all its coal assets during its abortive restructuring in 2016, but gave up because no one was willing to buy them at a price it found acceptable.

India's 2018 thermal coal imports grew at fastest pace in 4 yrs - sources

India's 2018 thermal coal imports rose at the fastest pace in four years, according to two industry sources, despite moves by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to cut imports in a bid to reduce its trade deficit. Coal is among the top five commodities imported by India, one of the world's largest consumers of coal, and the rise in imports of the fuel after two consecutive years of decline adds to its trade deficit. Thermal coal imports jumped 19 percent to 171.85 million tonnes in 2018, marking the fastest pace of growth since 2014, according to data from American Fuels & Natural Resources, a Dubai-based trader of U.S.-origin coal.

Rio Tinto announces new $3.2 billion share buyback, stock rises

The news helped to drive Rio Tinto's London share price (RIO.L) nearly 2 percent higher by 0927 GMT and pushed up the Australian listing (RIO.AX) by 3.5 percent. Across the mining sector, a trend to hand money back to shareholders has gathered steam following a recovery from the mining and commodity crash of 2015-16 and pressure from investors not to waste growing piles of cash on buying up assets that may never deliver returns. In its latest move, Rio Tinto, which has already returned more money to shareholders than its peers, said it will conduct an off-market share buyback for up to 41.2 million shares in its Australian entity Rio Tinto Ltd, worth about $1.9 billion, and further on-market purchases of London's Rio Tinto plc shares, bringing the total to $3.2 billion.

Graphic - Asian coal and gas markets roar into top gear as region revs up demand

Thermal coal and gas prices have coursed into a bull run, propelled by particularly strong demand across Asia, where electricity consumption is surging thanks to healthy economic growth just as seasonal needs rise with the start of summer. Spot thermal coal cargo prices for export from Australia's Newcastle terminal (GCLNWCPFBMc1) last settled at $117 per tonne, the highest level since February 2012. Coal prices have not just been pushed up by firm demand, which has recovered from 2015 lows, but also by several mine closures and weak investment into capacity expansion.
