Stocks recovered from morning losses on Thursday afternoon, but then gave back most of their gains by the end of the day. The volatile trading reflected continued concerns about rising coronavirus cases and the uncertain economic outlook, as Fed officials reiterated their calls for new fiscal stimulus measures from Congress. First-time unemployment claims rose slightly from the prior week to 870,000 and topped the consensus forecast of 840,000. Continuing claims, reported with a one-week lag, fell to 12.580 million from 12.747 million a week earlier, but also topped the consensus estimate. The Dow rose 0.20%, the S&P 0.30%, and the Nasdaq 0.37%. Crude oil rose slightly to about $40 per barrel, while gold rose $4 to $1872 per ounce.
