Stocks rose on Monday morning after Moderna reported that its vaccine candidate was 94.5% effective in preventing COVID-19 in a phase 3 trial. The report came a week after Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their own experimental vaccine, using a similar technology based on messenger RNA, was more than 90% effective in preventing the disease. Moderna shares rose more than 8%, while Pfizer stock fell 4%. The Dow rose 1.4%, the S&P 1.0%, and the Nasdaq 0.6%. Crude oil rose nearly 4% to $41.50 per barrel, while gold traded near $1887 per ounce.
