Each month, Director of Research Jim Kelleher, CFA, surveys the team of Argus Research industry analysts for their timeliest recommendations out of the company's fundamental universe of approximately 500 stocks. The Focus List typically includes 30 stocks: turnover is high, as Director of Research Kelleher typically adds three or four new stocks per month. The Portfolio Selector features the Argus Focus List, a group of 30 "best idea" stocks generated and regularly updated by Argus' analysts and investment policy committee. It also includes the director of research’s monthly investment strategy column, stock recommendations and sector picks, economic forecasts, and an asset allocation model. This month, the Focus List additions are Vontier Corp (VNT); Discover Financial Services (DFS); U.S. Bancorp. (USB); LyondellBasell Industries NV (LYB) and the Focus List deletions are Linde Plc (LIN); ServiceNow Inc (NOW); Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc (ODFL); Square Inc (SQ).

Form 13Fs are due 45 days after the end of calendar quarters, and are just now coming in from 1Q21. We like to review the 13Fs of the major activist investors, including Carl Icahn, Trian Fund Management, Jana Partners, and ValueAct Holdings, among others. Activist investing has evolved in recent years and is now less about generating a short-term return on an underpriced stock and more about achieving long-term returns through an active management/investor partnership. Here are some recent new purchases and key holdings of activist investors, according to Vickers.

The stock market was slammed by not one, but two concerning inflation data points in the trading week ending May 14. The consumer price index for April jumped by 0.8% month-over-month and by 4.2% year-over-year. The producer price index was even more concerning, rising a lesser 0.6% month-over-month but a higher 6.2% year-over-year.

Stocks recouped some of their recent losses on Thursday as investors sought buying opportunities and looked past more signs of rising inflation. The Labor Department reported that its producer price index rose 0.6% in April, above the Bloomberg consensus forecast of 0.3%. Producer prices also rose 6.2% from the prior year, above the 5.8% consensus. Meanwhile, first-time jobless claims fell to 473,000, down from the prior week and below the consensus forecast of 490,000. Continuing claims also fell to 3.655 million, down from 3.7 million a week earlier. The Dow rose 1.29%, the S&P 1.22%, and the Nasdaq 0.72%. Crude oil fell more than 3% to $64 per barrel, while gold rose $4 to $1827 per ounce.

Stocks were mixed on Monday morning, with strong gains in the Consumer Staples, Industrial, and Utility sectors and losses in Technology and Communication Services. Marriott shares fell 3% after the company posted lower-than-expected 1Q earnings, reflecting weak bookings in its core U.S. market. Tyson shares also fell, despite better-than-expected fiscal 2Q results, after management warned that rising costs would weigh on margins in the second half of the year. The Dow rose 0.8%, the S&P was flat, and the Nasdaq fell 1.4%. Crude oil traded near $64.50 per barrel, while gold rose $9 to $1839 per ounce.

Stocks fell on Friday morning following a new round of first-quarter earnings reports from major companies along with March consumer spending data. The Commerce Department said that U.S. consumer spending rose a strong 4.2% last month after a decline of 1.0% in February. The reading came in slightly ahead of the Reuters consensus forecast of 4.1%. The Dow fell 0.6%, the S&P 0.5%, and the Nasdaq 0.2%. Crude oil traded near $64 per barrel, while gold fell slightly to $1769 per ounce.
