Stocks traded lower on Friday morning after a strong two-day rally. Housing data was positive. The Commerce Department said that U.S. new home sales rose 1.5% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 740,000 units in August, up from 729,000 in July. The Reuters consensus had called for sales of 714,000 units. The Dow was flat, the S&P fell 0.1%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.5%. Crude oil traded near $73.50 per barrel, while gold fell $2 to $1748 per ounce.

Stocks fell on Friday morning on continued depressed consumer sentiment. The University of Michigan consumer sentiment index for September came in at 71, compared to economists' expectation for 72. However it was slightly up from August's final reading of 70.3. The Dow fell 0.5%, the S&P declined 0.7%, and the Nasdaq was down 1%. Crude oil traded near $72 per barrel, while gold fell $2 to $1755 per ounce.

Stocks gave up early gains on Tuesday morning after lower-than-expected inflation data failed to impress investors. The Labor Department said that its consumer price index rose 0.3% month-over-month in August, down from 0.5% growth in July and below the Reuters consensus forecast of 0.4%. The core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose 0.1%, down from 0.3% in July and below the 0.3% consensus. The core CPI also rose 4.0% from the prior year, down from 4.3% in July and below the consensus forecast. The Dow fell 0.6%, the S&P 0.3%, and the Nasdaq 0.1%. Crude oil traded near $71 per barrel, while gold rose $6 to $1801 per ounce.
