Amazon hiring 10k more workers in Bellevue, WA

Yahoo Finance's Kristin Myers and Dan Howley discuss Amazon's plans to add 10,000 jobs on top of the 15,000 already announced in Bellevue, WA.

Video Transcript

KRISTIN MYERS: Let's talk Amazon. That's down right now, 3.3%. That company is actually planning to hire thousands of employees. For more on this, we're joined by our resident tech-pert, Dan Howley. Hey, Dan.

DAN HOWLEY: Hey, Kristin, how you doing? Yes, they're going to hire 10,000 more employees, and they will be housed in different towers in Bellevue, Washington. Now this is kind of a way for Amazon to avoid the issues that it's had in Seattle proper. But as much as people say Bellevue is a suburb of Seattle, you can really just throw a stone at Seattle from Bellevue. It's just across Lake Washington from Seattle itself. And Amazon already has facilities there. It's kind of this big area outside of Seattle, where you have this Bellevue, and then above that, you have Richmond. And that's where Microsoft is. And Microsoft also has towers in Bellevue as well or at least offices in Bellevue as well.

So this is kind of going to be more of a crunch in that area, despite the fact that Amazon clearly wants to avoid that. And it really speaks to how much Amazon is really putting into hiring. They already made announcements that they'll be hiring thousands of more employees across the US, and this could be in response partially to the fact that their HQ 2 didn't exactly work out as originally planned when they wanted to set it up in New York. They ended up moving it down to Crystal City in Maryland. So they didn't have as many opportunities as they could to really fill out that space as they wanted to.

So they still need to get as many employees as possible. They already have well over 100,000 or so employees in the payrolls now. And they're just going to continue to add on to that. So I think this 10,000 in Bellevue, they're going to focus probably on the hiring, the tech jobs, and then we'll just continue to see where they build out from there. But it's a company that continues to outperform, so they're going to need a lot more folks to continue to power it.

KRISTIN MYERS: And of course, good news, Dan, for folks out there that need jobs. So a couple of thousand more private payrolls expected to be added.
