Craig: Anyone who says the “free market” will make health care affordable and readily available, is either lying, ignorant, or delusional. For starters, the U.S. has had a dysfunctional “free market” for more than 40 years. Mega mergers and acquisitions which make a mockery of monopoly laws, CEOs getting pay increases, bonuses, golden parachutes regardless of performance, and tax breaks/contracts in return for campaign contributions, make the notion of “free market” in the U.S. a laughable proposition. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. If I were to list all the examples of our dysfunctional “free market,” along with its inherent incompatibilities related to the technical and ethical complexities of health care, my post would be ten times longer.
