Biden administration offers exchange of Russian arms dealer for Brittney Griner

Yahoo Finance Live's Seana Smith examines the White House's offer to Russian officials, negotiating the release basketball player Brittney Griner.

Video Transcript

SEANA SMITH: The Biden administration says it has offered the exchange of Russian convicted arms trafficker Viktor Bout as part of a deal to secure the release of WNBA player Brittany Griner and security professional Paul Whelan, according to a new report from CNN. Now Whalen has been imprisoned in Russia for alleged espionage since 2018. And Griner was arrested for drug possession in February.

Griner pleaded guilty to bringing cannabis into the country earlier this month and faces 10 years in prison as a result. Her trial is ongoing, and according to US officials, would need to conclude before negotiations for her release can move forward. Bout, a former Soviet military officer, is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in the US on charges of conspiring to kill Americans, acquire and export anti-aircraft missiles, and providing support to a terrorist organization.
