Biden meets with Johnson, Suu Kyi faces new corruption cases, EU forgoes J&J vaccine: RPT

Yahoo Finance’s Akiko Fujita breaks down the top stories around the world.

Video Transcript

AKIKO FUJITA: In our World View today, President Biden is meeting with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson ahead of the G7 summit. The two leaders announcing the renewal of the Atlantic Charter, identifying areas where the countries plan to cooperate including on global recovery from the pandemic.

The president is expected to warn the UK leader not to imperil the Northern Ireland peace process as trade talks between the European Union and the UK appear to be on the brink. The UK is looking to establish a trade border post Brexit, but definitely tension is around its only land border, between Ireland and Northern Ireland. Biden's message-- stop heated EU negotiations from undermining the Good Friday Agreement that ended three decades of fighting in Northern Ireland.

The European Union will not buy up additional doses of Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine in a hit to confidence for J&J. The EU had the option of buying up 100 million additional doses by the end of June. But officials told "Reuters" supply delays have raised some concerns. J&J committed to delivering 55 million doses to the EU by the end of the month. It's only sent roughly a quarter of that commitment so far.

Meanwhile, President Biden says the US will spend $3.5 billion to buy and donate 500 million doses of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine to the world's poorest countries. And he's urging other G7 nations to follow suit.

And Myanmar's military government has opened new corruption cases against deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other former officials from her government. The accusations involved misuse of land for a charitable foundation she chaired as well as allegations that she accepted money and gold. Suu Kyi already faces a slew of charges, including violations of coronavirus regulations. She was overthrown in a military coup back in February.
