Biden says he doesn’t support the Green New Deal

Democratic nominee and Former Vice President Joe Biden said he does not support the Green New Deal during Tuesday's presidential debate. Yahoo Finance's Rick Newman discusses.

Video Transcript

JULIE HYMAN: It's time for Word on the Street where we check in with our panelists, find out what stories they are watching. Rick Newman, of course, is still poring over every moment of the debate. But one stood out in particular. It had to do with Joe Biden's comments on the Green New Deal.

CHRIS WALLACE: Do you support--

JOE BIDEN: No, I don't support the Green New Deal--

DONALD TRUMP: Oh, you don't? Oh, well, that's a big statement. That means you just lost the radical left.

JOE BIDEN: I support the-- I support the Biden Plan that I put forward.

CHRIS WALLACE: OK.

JOE BIDEN: The Biden Plan, which is different than what he calls the radical Green New Deal.

JULIE HYMAN: Rick, what's the Biden Plan?

RICK NEWMAN: You heard that exchange if you stuck with the debate up till about the one hour mark. I know a lot of people probably flipped it off before then. The Biden Plan is less aggressive than the Green New Deal. He still wants to move the grid off of fossil fuels and onto alternative energy. He does have a pretty aggressive target for doing that. It's just not as aggressive as the Green New Deal. And then he doesn't load up his plan with all these other things that are in the Green New Deal, such as a guaranteed job for everybody, health care for everybody, and a lot of stuff that's in the Green New Deal that isn't exactly about climate change.

So I thought it was important that Biden said outright, I don't support the Green New Deal. Because Biden is actually trying to have it two different ways. He's trying to present himself as a moderate candidate who will appeal to independents while at the same time carry along the support of Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and many others in the progressive wing of the party who want a lot more aggressive action than Biden does. So he came out and said it. And now voters have to digest what they think it's all about.
