The British pound dips after UK GDP unexpectedly falls for second straight month; more than a dozen rebranded McDonald's restaurants reopen in Russia under new ownership; and 'Jurassic World Dominion' takes the top spot at the box office on its opening weekend.

Video Transcript

JULIE HYMAN: Some other business headlines we're watching right now, we're watching the pound fall. That's after UK GDP fell for the second straight month. It's the first back-to-back decline since March and April of 2020 at the start of the pandemic. GDP contracted by 0.3%. Economists were looking for a 1/10 of a percent contraction, the first time since January of last year that all main economic sectors shrunk. The Bank of England due to announce its latest interest rate response to surging inflation later this week.

More than a dozen McDonald's restaurants reopen in Russia under new ownership. Siberian businessman Alexander Gobor bought the fast food giant's Russian stores earlier this year. Marketing around the reopening aimed at convincing Russians that the new chain's burgers are as good as the American version. The rebranded chain is keeping the same menu, but it does come with a new logo and a new name, which translates to, tasty, and that's it.

And another hit at the box office, "Jurassic World Dominion" bringing in $143 million in its weekend debut in North America, beating both "Top Gun, Maverick" and "The Batman" in its opening weekend internationally. The film has secured about $246 million since opening last month. "Top Gun, Maverick" steadily holding the number two spot, bringing in $50 million over the weekend. Sozz.

BRIAN SOZZI: Yeah, Julie, I got that name translated wrong. I thought it meant saturated fat.
