Was Klondike's announcement that it is discontinuing the Choco Taco just a marketing ruse? Yahoo Finance's Akiko Fujita and Brian Chueng discuss.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Well, before we go to break, a quick detour here. Earlier this week, we reported on the death of the Choco Taco, a beloved dessert cone shaped like a taco. Let's rewind to Tuesday, actually, for what we said.
Cheers. There we go.
AKIKO FUJITA: Goodbye, Choco Taco. By the way--
BRIAN CHEUNG: Goodbye, Choco Taco.
AKIKO FUJITA: By the way, I'm going to float a theory here because we were talking about this. Is it really going away?
BRIAN CHEUNG: See--
AKIKO FUJITA: Or is it part of one--
BRIAN CHEUNG: The conspiracy theories start coming out now.
AKIKO FUJITA: --fake marketing campaign?
BRIAN CHEUNG: Well, apparently, that might not be a conspiracy theory because the treat maker Klondike clarifying yesterday that while they are actually discontinuing it, they are currently discussing next steps, as we're paraphrasing here in this tweet. They apparently have 912 left at their headquarters, but you were right.
AKIKO FUJITA: I wish we could show the photo that went with this tweet. It is a Choco Taco at a press conference.
BRIAN CHEUNG: At a podium.
AKIKO FUJITA: Oh, there you go, yeah.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Oh, there it is. Yeah, you can see it's addressing all of those questions--
AKIKO FUJITA: I knew it. I knew it.
BRIAN CHEUNG: --there, yeah.
AKIKO FUJITA: Look, the popsicle's even there.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Which, by the way, it makes no sense that Klondike, their logo is on the mic. Are they interviewing their own? What's going on here?
AKIKO FUJITA: I mean, who knows? Who cares if they bring it back, right?
BRIAN CHEUNG: Well, now it's just silly.
AKIKO FUJITA: You want it to come back.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Well, now I feel silly for clearing out the bodega of all the Choco Tacos if they're just going to bring them back anyway.
AKIKO FUJITA: But maybe that contributed to it. Everybody went out and got--
BRIAN CHEUNG: And we were--
AKIKO FUJITA: People were in the same position, right? They sold out everywhere. People were crying. They were outraged on Twitter.
BRIAN CHEUNG: A lot of emotions.
AKIKO FUJITA: And now here we are.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Including us. Yeah, maybe we were part to blame.
AKIKO FUJITA: It was all a marketing campaign.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Yeah.
AKIKO FUJITA: I'm going to just call it right now. We'd love to have Klondike back on.
BRIAN CHEUNG: Well, hey, this would be an excuse to bring the Choco Taco back on set when they do inevitably bring it back, so we'll have that.
AKIKO FUJITA: Yes, another excuse to eat it.
