Dow and S&P 500 on track for lowest 2022 closing

Yahoo Finance reporter Ines Ferre looks at how markets settled to end the month of September.

Video Transcript

RACHELLE AKUFFO: All right, we're just minutes away from the closing bell to wrap up this third quarter. Let's bring in Yahoo Finance's Ines Ferre to break down the market action. Hey, Ines.

INES FERRE: Hey, Rachelle, and it's more selling in this final minutes of trading. We are going to be closing at the lows of the session. Take a look at our YFi Interactive. You can see the major averages here. But I do want to point out quarter to date where we're at because the S&P 500 losing more than 5% quarter to date.

But really, a lot of the action has happened over the last month, because month to date, you are down 9% on the S&P 500. In fact, this is the third month this year that the S&P 500 has fallen by 7% or more. Also, looking at the month to date for the Dow and the NASDAQ composite, down more than 10% month to date.

Let's take a look at where we're ending the session with our sectors because we are seeing that the sectors, if I can just pull it up on the screen here-- there we go-- the sector action, most of the sectors in the red for today. Month to date, you are looking at a red, deep red for a lot of these sectors. And then also quarter to date, you are seeing that consumer discretionary quarter to date is up 3.7%. But overall, again, a lot of the bloodbath has happened over the last month.

Taking a look also at the Dow, deep red for Disney. Nike down 12%. Boeing also lower. And on the NASDAQ 100, we're watching Apple down 3% after Apple was down yesterday. Take a look at the 138 level. Also looking at Tesla, down 1% right now.
