    Vertex terminates COO for 'personal behavior'

    Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (vrtx) announced Wednesday afternoon that Chief Operating Officer and interim Chief Financial Officer Ian Smith had been terminated as "the result of personal behavior that violated Vertex's Code of Conduct and values." Vertex said that the decision was made after an investigation that included the help of outside counsel, but did not specify Smith's actions. "At Vertex, we are deeply committed to our culture of diversity, inclusion and respect, and we insist that all of our employees, regardless of their seniority, live our values and adhere to our Code of Conduct," Chief Executive Jeffrey Leiden said in the announcement. Smith was acting as CFO after Vertex's previous CFO left for a startup in December.
