Grocery delivery may cost extra $242 a month, survey reveals

Yahoo Finance’s Heidi Chung joins Zack Guzman to discuss how the additional cost of food and grocery delivery services can add up over a month, as many Americans stay at home during the coronavirus.

Video Transcript

ZACK GUZMAN: You're digging into the way that a lot of Americans have been choosing to get groceries delivered. But that could be coming with a hefty price tag when you dig into the numbers. I want to bring on Heidi Chung who's been looking at that. And Heidi, it looks like, while it is a little bit more convenient, you are spending quite a bit more for delivering those things.

HEIDI CHUNG: Yeah, Zack, I think we've been talking about delivery essentially every single day, but it's not just hefty little processing fees that are added onto the restaurant or grocery side, the consumer is also paying a fair share and amount more as well.

And you know what? We've been seeing a lot of these different surveys sort of hit the market, but a new comprehensive survey by FitRated found some interesting trends when it comes to food delivery. They asked about 1,000 people, those that have at least order delivery within the past month.

And what they found was first and foremost, their favorite delivery platform is Grubhub. 66% of the participants said that. And 60% preferred DoorDash. 59% said UberEats, and 28% said Postmates. When it comes to grocery delivery, Amazon Fresh was the top favorite there with InstaCart coming in at number two. And Amazon Prime grocery delivery was number three.

Baby boomers were the most likely to order their groceries for delivery. And millennials were the most likely to order restaurant delivery. But like you said, it is not inexpensive to order food delivery. The survey found that it's specifically about $24 to $64 extra per month. On average, people could be saving around $242 per month by not using any of these delivery platforms.

But some people out there, Zack, say, time is money. And this is what people use delivery for, is to save time. And the survey found that people who did not use any grocery stores or grocery services spent on average three hours and 46 minutes in each grocery store shopping every month. But those who use the app spent only 66 minutes. So you're saving a lot of time using these apps.

ZACK GUZMAN: Yeah, time is money, and money might actually be your health now at this point, too, if you can go ahead and get groceries delivered and not have to worry about going into the store. A lot of people are very nervous about that. But Heidi Chung, thank you for bringing us that.
